    Transfer Case Rebuild?

So I have a feeling that the chain in my TC is worn.

When getting on and off the throttle at lower speeds, there is a snapping noise coming from that area.

It also has a rattle noise when just going about five mph or so with a very light throttle.

I don't have any slippage that I can feel, at least like it is slipping teeth.

So the main question is, has anyone rebuilt one before?

It doesn't look too complicated, especially if i want to replace the chain and sprockets.

What is an excellent place to get the parts from?

Google searches give me options, but I am not familiar with any companies.

By the way, it is in 2012 with the BW4446.

I probably should have led with that, ha; ha, sorry.

I had used Allstate Gear before for trans parts in my stick.

They also carry parts and rebuild kits for this and other transfer cases, trans, etc.

Their prices were reasonable (I had shopped around and couldn't find a kit or certain parts I needed, but they had everything).

I thought the parts and service delivery was excellent; friendly folks to deal with.

I can't speak for others, but I had no issues and would use them again.

I have no affiliation with them, just a happy customer.

It's been a while since I did a transfer case, but the most challenging part of doing it was removing and installing it.

Rebuilding them was a breeze to me, not hard at all.

I'm sure others may feel differently.

I second Allstate gear, and they also have an eBay store caller gear5th if you want to go that route.

I'll have to check them out.

I'm just trying to figure out if that is really where this noise is coming from.

It runs nice and smooth on the hyway, but it does click coming on and off the throttle.

The only thing is I have only used the 4wd a handful of times.

I have that live front axel, so it does turn constantly, and I have heard that it will cause the chain to stretch even if you don't use it often because of it.

I don't want to drop another 700 bucks on a chain and d Sprockets to find out that wasn't it.

So resurrecting an older thread but do you have to remove the t case to swap the chain and sprocket?

The few pictures that I have seen make it look like that may not be entirely necessary.

I think that would make life a little easier, just taking off the back case half and swapping it out.

If it’s a short bed or has a long bed with a def tank you definitely need to remove it.

    Pull the transfer case.

It’s going to be a huge pita to get the snap rings on and off and hold the shafts straight while trying to put the case half back on.

I’d pull the case, and you will be thankful you did.

    T case rebuild is straightforward.

I believe I used all state gear myself.

It’s all a blur nowadays as I also rebuilt several NV4500s around the same time and torque king was a godsend for tools.

2021 Ram 3500 DRW, H.O., bypass oil filtration, bypass coolant filtration, S&B CAI, 4:10’s
    2wd low loc kit.
Reacquired 2001 3500, 5.9 nv4500, dually cab and chassis, 5” straight pipe, edge juice w/attitude. Otherwise all stock…..for now.

    Re: Transfer Case Rebuild?

I'm trying to figure out if it is the t case or if I have worn your joints.

When getting on and off the throttle, I get these click noises like breaking a dry stick.

I've been under there several times and played with the drive shafts and can't find any play in them.

I have some clicking in the diffs when I twist the driveshafts back and forth.

I know there is supposed to be some play between the ring gear and pinion.

    Maybe they are getting worn?

I haven't done anything to them other than swap fluids a few times since I've had the truck.

I'm coming up on 150k very soon.

Unless you've been doing boosted launches in 4 wheel drive, I highly doubt your problem is in the t case or differentials.

I have 335,000 on my 2009, which gets used to hard towing and plowing snow.

T case and differentials have never been touched other than fluid changes.

I would guess more than likely you have bad ujoints somewhere.

    That is my thoughts too.

    The 4wd rarely gets used.

I've never done a boosted launch.

I've hit it on a stoplight a few times, but that's it.

    U joints are cheaper anyway.

I may try that first and see where that gets me.

I'll probably rebuild the front driveshaft while I'm in there.

The only sound that I can sure know is coming from the t case is a light chain buzz that I can hear if I am coasting at, say, 40mph next to a wall or something.

    I figure that is normal.

Maybe not, I don't know, LOL.
