Oil Change Indicator Shows 3/4 At 4,000 Miles

I got a new 3500 (2016, new to me), and it was bought with a fresh oil change.

I am 4,000 miles into it, and it shows 3/4 engine oil life remaining on the fancy Laramie dash indicator.

That would suggest an engine oil life of 16,000.

I plan to change the oil at 8,000 as I did for the life of my previous 2007 2500 6.7L engine, but why would the indicator suggest it is good to go for 16,000 before needing an oil change?

That can’t be right, can it?

My 17 did the same thing before a 4000k mile road trip I took.

I change at 10k miles regardless of what the

Dash says, but it's usually really close though when I do reach the 10k miles.

It's displayed by an algorithm that probably factors fuel used miles driven, idle time vs. driving time.

    And possibly load percentage.

Regardless of the oil change indicator, the oil change intervals should not exceed 15,000 miles (24,000 km) or six months or 500 Hours, whichever comes first.

Some folks use extra filtration and oil analysts to determine their schedule.

I break the six-month rule and change once a year when not traveling and driving less than 6,000 miles a year.

Just my Opinion/Thought - As much soot that is collected within the oil (itself) = Non-Deleted 6.7L

I will not go past 10K miles on a single OCI.

Once I am deleted - I might add a single or dual stage Oil by-pass system to compliment the HSS (Green Diamond) HDEO & its extended drain capabilities.

I am possibly extending my OCI out to 25-30K miles - with the use of a quality UOA program/company!
