Advice Needed - Dana 70 Rebuild

The rear diff on my work truck seems like it is due for new bearings; the pinion shaft has a good amount of slop and vibration driving down the road.

Are there any good write-ups on rebuilding the Dana 70?

I can't find how to set the pinion depth anywhere.

You have to go by pattern.

    Start with the original shim.

If you use Dana ring and pinion, odds are the original shim will work perfectly.

From my experience, the shims are to make up the difference in the cases, not the pinions.

I second the start with the original shim(s) first.

Check the patterns and go from there.

There is some good info out on the interwebs on what to do from there; it would be a lot to type!

I ended up tearing it apart and having it back together in about 5-6 hours.

It was simple and straightforward to do.

Replaced carrier and pinion bearings, inspected everything else for wear, and flushed the carrier and complete axle tubes/diff housing out very thoroughly.

The job idea seemed a bit intimidating at first but went well once I got into it.

I wish I had taken some pics/videos during the process.
