WTB: Head Gasket

Well, I think it’s blown.

I just returned from a six-month deployment, and the truck had been sitting for most of the time.

The wife and I jumped in the truck to drive about 60 miles to Palm Springs.

I let the truck warm up before getting in the road; about halfway there, my wife says, “I smell onions,” we kept going, and the smell started to get worse, so I turned on recirculating air, no more smell.

I made it to Palm Springs and then came home, another 60 miles.

The temperature stayed right at 189deg the whole trip, and I never got to 70mph.

I got home, popped the hood, smelled stronger.

I noticed the lid was popped open on the coolant overflow tank.

I pulled the dipstick and noticed a green tint to my oil as if the coolant was in my oil.

It so looks like I’ll be replacing my head gasket.

Any tips for me?

Recommended replacement gasket?

Is machining the head a must?

I would take this opportunity to have the head inspected, re-surfaced, and rebuilt.

Install a new OEM head gasket and ARP head studs.

Nothing else would cause coolant in the oil?

Yes, usually cracked head or blown head gasket.

I would doubt it is cracked just because it was okay for the first 2/3 of my trip.

It still could be, but I doubt it.

I’m just surprised that engine temp remained low and didn’t elevate or fluctuate at all.

I couldn't keep the radiator topped up because it was puking coolant out.

One good way to tell immediately is to start the truck with the radiator cap off and see if bubbles are coming out.

This doesn't always happen, but it's one check you can do.

I couldn't keep the radiator topped up because it was puking coolant out.

One good way to tell immediately is to start the truck with the radiator cap off and see if bubbles are coming out.

This doesn't always happen, but it's one check you can do.

No bubbles were coming out of the radiator, I checked the oil in the daylight, and it was jet black.

I just finished an oil change.

The oil coming out of the drain plug was jet black.

I accidentally dumped half a bottle of Lucas oil stabilizer in the fuel tank, and I think that’s the smell I’m getting from it burning through the oil stabilizer.

Not to self, don’t mess with stuff about 27 hours of travel LOL.
