    As in, I'm pretty sure 06 is CP3, right?

    And yes, according to pretty much every person aside from the engineers who designed the CP4, the CP3 is more reliable when ANY moisture is involved.

    I was referencing the driving gear seal or whatever is behind it.

    Yes, the 03-07 5.9L Cummins did use the CP3 pump.

    Agree it is possible the CP3 pump seal could be leaking.

    I have attached some information from Oregon Fuel injectors that may be a helpful troubleshooting guide.

    Do you mean black smoke?

    But the CP3 is rattling very much under acceleration.

    I'm no diesel tech.

    But I would think that if you check your oil level even as often as every 3000 miles and didn't notice any white or black fuel smoke, the problem wouldn't be injectors.

    If everyone thinks that fuel is passing by the rings, that would mean that an injector is leaking pretty bad, which should cause high EGT's in that cylinder and heavy fuel smoke, not necessarily black smoke strong with odor.

    I would look for a leaking drive gear first if there were no smoke evident, and if I found no issue, I would look further for a fuel source, not including fuel passing by rings.

    Thanks, no, there was no smoke.

    I just lost my oil pressure when I was reversing in my garage.

    Then I could smell diesel and noticed a leak, probably because the engine started to get overfueld with diesel.

    I have drained it now and will start looking.

    Do you think the best choice is to remove the CP3 first?

    Any obvious signs?

    I realize what the others may have been referring to.

    If one of the top orings on the injector has failed, fuel could dump onto the head, mixing with oil that wouldn't smoke.

    It could be either or.

    It could be a cracked head also though I haven't heard of such happening.

    I would think that a CP3 seal failure would be more uncommon but possible.

    Does your engine have a cover over where the CP3 drive gear would be?

    A buddy of mine has a 06, which does.

    If so, check for shaft play.

    I would be more concerned honestly with the loss in oil pressure.

    What damage has been done already?

    I will remove the headcover first and take a closer look at the injectors.

    If everything seems to be in order, the CP3 will be next.

    It looks like it doesn't have a cover.

    I think I lost oil pressure because of all of the diesel full in the engine.

    I drained the oil and refiled it, and fired it up.

    No damage seems to be done.
