    NCDOT Authority

    Hello all.

I’m looking to get myself a dump trailer as a side hustle.

At what point do I need to have dot numbers in North Carolina?

Also, do I need dot authority if I pull my enclosed trailer or camper as long as I’m under 26,001?

    My truck's GVWR is 11,800.

I’ve read so many things that I don’t know what I need if anything DOT-related.

    Thanks, @Chris_24V

I’m pretty sure if you're using a dump trailer for private use, you don’t need DOT numbers, but if you are using it for a business, then I think you do.

Do not hold me to that?

As for an RV, I’m not sure?

I’ve never owned an RV trailer.

I know that you have to have a weighted tag for your truck to match the gross weight of your truck and whatever you are hauling/pulling.

The rule is if you receive payment of any kind, Inc. Fuel, commercial CDL is required.

In addition, if your trailer is snickered to haul 10.000lbs or more, even for personal use, you need a class of noncommercial.

Idk bout tax numbers, dot, etc.

    Re: NCDOT Authority

Depending on the size of your dump trailer, like previously stated, then yes, your class C license technically won’t cut it.

You’ll be fine without DOT numbers unless it’s a big trailer.

Camper no, as long as you are under 26000, you are fine.

Call your local highway patrol office and ask to speak with a motor carrier Sgt.

They can answer it cause they will be who is enforcing it.

I watched that 26k pound combined weight, and you should be ok.

If you are worried about it when you haul your camper, put "not for hire" on the side of your truck, but usually, state police can tell if you are a weekend warrior going camping or a hotshot transferring trailers.
