It seems to be a 1 piece insert and 1 set screw visible on top.

I didn’t feel around the edge for more because that wasn’t the mission at the time.

It could be pressed in, but that set screw is suspect unless it’s just a redundant safety item.

I don't like to say it is absolute, but that doesn't change that this is another EPA item.

It is not regulated, really, but a "noise pollutant device" it was not intended to be removed, which is why they pinned it in.

Divide the housing into thirds from the pin you can see.

There will be three pins radially every 120 deg.

Also, I forgot to mention an alignment dowel in the back of the compressor housing, so clocking on reinstalling is critical.

Despite being unofficially called a turbo silencer ring by many, it is not a noise device.

The sole purpose of the ring is to direct air into the turbo.

Any clue why this turbo requires one?

The air has no other option but to go there. Is it because it’s a VGT, maybe?

I've had a few turbo cars, and this is the first one I’ve had with this.

Yes, the air has no option other than to enter the compressor housing but how it bounces around in cover before it enters is what it is intended.

I would imagine It follows the same reasoning as smoothing intake runners and ports.

Air flows easier with less resistance.

    It doesn’t require it.

You will be fine removing it.

You won’t tell the difference in removing it performance-wise any more than you will by adding a cold air intake.

It will just make more noise.
