    What’s This?

Last night, I put a CAI on and noticed the turbo looks like it has a sleeve in the inlet with a tiny set screw.

Does it improve airflow or something?

    It resembles some Dyson tech.

I’d think there would be less turbulence without it.

    Is it a VGT thing?

I’ve owned turbo cars before, but they were all fixed geometry, and I’ve never seen one, is why I ask.

If you are talking at the compressor inlet, I believe it's a silencer ring.

    It quiets it down some.

I also believe it can be removed; it should help add high pitch turbo noise, I don't know how much.

I think that's the one thing I miss from my turbo rx7 is the high pitch turbo whine when it spools!

Tt’s a silencer ring to help funnel the flow of air into the compressor wheel and lessen the noise of the the turbo whistle.

Do you know if there are any adverse effects if removed?

Not sure but, I would think it could cause turbulence that could result in slight power loss and perhaps uneven forces on the compressor wheel.

I honestly don’t know and have never tried it.

    Silencer ring.

It has been said that there is a loss of power, albeit minuscule.

In reality, with the ring removed, the turbo notes are audible in the cab with windows up.

I removed mine, and the turbo sound is not overpowering g but noticeable.

I can not tell any difference in performance. Has been removed for 60000 miles.

My 2016 had 3 dowels to be removed very carefully.

I saved the ring but would not put it back.

    Sounds good.

Nice, I'm gonna try to take mine off now.

Can you get it off without removing the turbo?

Take those little screws (3?) out on edge?

    Re: What’s This?

Yes, sorry, no, the intake housing will need to be removed to take the silencer ring.

This is simple but be careful of the impeller wheel.

When reinstalling the impeller housing, be especially careful to clock the housing properly b4 tightening the vband.

Also when you believe that the housing is in place correctly, check for free rotation of the impeller b4 tightening.

Shouldn't be set screws but press dowels.

My 2020 looks like the one in the pic.

It seems to be a 1 piece insert and 1 set screw visible on top.

I didn’t feel around the edge for more because that wasn’t the mission at the time.

It could be pressed in, but that set screw is suspect unless it’s just a redundant safety item.
