Changed Steering Gears - Now Power Steering Doesn't Work And Spotty Brakes

So I need some help am having a problem with my power steering and brakes.

I swapped out my steering box for a red headbox today, and once I got it installed and went through the bleeding procedure, I took it for a drive.

Coming out of the driveway, it was great.

Drove down steering was nice and tight, way less wander and bump-induced redirection.

When I let off the throttle and slowed down to make a turn, I had no power steering at all.

I gave it a small amount of gas, and it came right back with no issues.

It does this every time I try and make a low-speed turn, like turning into a parking space.

    It is basically impossible.

There is a bit of brake degradation too.

    They aren't acting right.

I also noticed, going through the bleeding procedure again in the driveway, that if I turn the wheel and hit the brakes simultaneously, the wheel jolts like I hit the stops.

I can see how my pump would work just fine when I pull it in the garage, I swap 1 part, and now it doesn't work.

Have you contacted the company to see what they say?

    Is your power steering foaming?

I haven't gotten ahold of them yet as it is Sunday.

I did look at the fluid, and it is not foamy at all.

I went through the whole bleeding procedure a second time, and the fluid level in the reservoir didn't even drop.

I can't see it being air.

It honestly seems like the pump can't provide enough flow, but that sounds crazy as it was just fine a day ago with a different steering box in it.

Oh yeah, I guess it is Sunday. LOL

Maybe your pump was already weak from the previous gearbox?

Whatever you find out, could you keep us updated?

I did some more reading and found someone had some issues with the ps reservoir cap.

I did replace mine because the blacktop came off.

I also noticed that when I take it off after driving, it makes a pop noise like it had pressure or something in it.

    Anyone ever heard of this?

How did you bleed the system?

Filled reservoir, turned the wheel lock to lock with the motor not running about 5 times, then checked the reservoir and repeated until I got 20 full cycles back and forth.

I topped off the reservoir again and started the truck.

Let it run for about 15 seconds and shut it off.

It topped off the reservoir again.

I started the motor again, ran the steering lock to lock 5 times, and then checked the fluid level.

I repeated this until I hit 20 full back and forth cycles.

Just for good measure, I also put the brake pedal to the floor about 15 times.

I let it sit overnight and did this whole process two more times the next day.

I have no foam and the last time I did the bleed procedure the fluid level did not move at all.

I do it with the wheels off the ground, so there’s no resistance on anything, but it should be good.

It doesn’t take a whole lot of air to tear up a pump that has some miles on it.

It sounds like you just got unlucky.

    I think I did too.

I have a new pump on order now.

I also figured I'd change all the lines out too while I'm in there.

This pump had 130000 miles on it.

I'm sure I have a lot of components that are wearing.
