Thread: What Size Exhaust And Muffler, Or No?

What Size Exhaust And Muffler, Or No?

I am looking into tuning and a complete exhaust system for a 2014 RAM 2500.

I am looking for any input regarding 4" vs. 5" and muffler or no.

I do not want the truck to be obnoxious, but I also want to hear it more than the stock system.

I am looking for any opinions on the matter.

The truck will primarily serve as a family/truck camper hauler and part-time company truck, so I do not want to piss off the Mrs. or the customers.

    Thanks!
    Dave

    I have a 2010 DRW and stayed 4” turbo-back.

    Kept the factory muffler.

Loud turbo whine in cold weather startup on high idle.

Otherwise, just a bit louder than stock, except when the EB engages - pretty good turbo whistle then.

We tow a 15k fifth wheel, and when towing in fifth gear at 2k rpm, there is a bit of a drone in the cab, but not too bad.

I installed the 5" turbo-back with no muffler originally, way too loud and droned a ton.

Put a 5" resonator on, quieted it down a bit but still loud, and drones at 2K RPM.

I wonder if doing a race pipe (DPF/CAT) would provide a reasonable sound without hindering performance too badly?

Sure a race pipe will get the job done. Unless you are increasing to 5”, there is no need to go turbo back.

I went 4” downpipe back with the muffler to get rid of most of the drone.

Besides a deeper exhaust tone, you won’t notice any difference in performance between the 4” and 5” unless you are pushing much higher HP.

    I would suggest a 4" over 5".

As others mention, there are really no performance gains, just noisier.

My buddy and I have the same truck; he went 5," and I went 4".

He regrets it and does not like the drone. 4" TBE with a resonator directly after the downpipe is what I have, and no complaints.

I've got a 4" with a muffler, and it's quiet until the exhaust brake kicks in, then it's Hella loud.

    FYI

I put a Donaldson on mine.

Good sound with no drone when towing.

I had an Aero resonator prior, a bad drone on the highway, and towing.
