    Installing ARP Head Stud Bolts

So nothing is ever easy with Dodge.

I need a few opinions from guys who have done the head gasket and installed ARP bolts.

The short story head gasket is bad.

    Dodge is covering under warranty.

Mechanic recommends installing ARP head bolts while he is doing the job.

Dodge tells me the bolts are $514.96, totally cool with that.

When I pick the truck up, I get hit with a $1100.00 labor bill (which I was never told about) + the bolts ($514.96).

Let me first say I have never installed ARP bolts on a 6.7 Cummins or many other motors. Yes.

Reading ARP instructions, it only mentions dremeling 1 bolt, maybe 2. With a labor rate of $200/hr (guessing), what took 5.5hrs?

    What am I missing?

    Thoughts.

    2017 3500 with 89k miles. Stock truck

I get the truck back, and it makes it less than a mile down the road.

It shuts down, acts like it's running out of fuel...Unreal!

It has to be towed back to the dealer.

You have to Dremel the girdle for the rearmost stud.

Torquing them in the correct order 3 separate times in even increments.

Putting your rocker assemblies back in and adjusting the valves.

    $1k isn't unreasonable because it is time-consuming.

If FCA covered the gasket and labor, then your rate should have been prorated.

From my understanding, the entire job was covered by FCA under warranty.

I would "think" rocker assemblies and torquing of the head should have been part of the gasket job?

Yes/no? Again, I never had one apart.

Can you get the head off without removing the rocker assemblies?

That's why I'm saying the stud job should have been pro-rated since they were already pulling the head anyway.

Some dealers may do it this way, but it can get dealers in a lot of trouble.

FCA warranty would charge back the whole job if they found out dealers put head studs and not factory bolts on a warranty job.

    Makes sense.

I understand they were trying to do the job right /better, and I just wish they would have been upfront about the labor cost.

It didn't help when the truck had to be towed back to the dealer for not running the same day.

    Just FYI.

If someone needs a truck you can tow with while Dodge has yours, Enterprise Truck Rental has Duallys & Flatbeds you can tow a gooseneck with.

    It's not cheap, $710/week, but I'm working.

    I'm going on week 5.

Any word from the dealership why your truck quit running after you picked it up?

Not yet, but the service rider doesn't think it has anything to do with the work done. LOL
