    Gearing - 2021 3500 DRW RAM

I got a 2021 3500 DRW; it comes with the 4:10 gear set and Aisin.

    My old truck was a 2017 2500 G56 with a 3:42 gear set.

I'm thinking about putting 3:42 in my new truck, and I do tow semi-regularly a 16000 lbs fifth wheel toy hauler.

My 2017 didn't have a problem towing it and got almost 20 mpg when not towing, so I've been tossing around the idea of switching.

Has anyone changed out their gears similar to this, and how do you like it?

I traded my deleted 17 G56 for a 21 aisin because my wife hated how it towed the camper ?

I’ve never switched to a higher gear set, but yours being a DRW, I personally don’t think you will like going to 3.42 gears from a 4.10 on a DRW especially towing 16,000 lbs.

    That’s my personal opinion.

    I wouldn't.

It's a sacrifice either way, and I personally would not sacrifice the towing ability for fuel mileage.

If anything, after you wear a set of tires out, size up a size or 2 if it's doable.

A two-inch bigger diameter tire will only raise the truck an inch and take the ratio closer to the 3.73 area.

I put bigger tires on my truck (35 12.50 17 Toyo open country AT3) a couple of months ago, and I'm getting better fuel mileage than I was before.

I also have 4.10 gears too. I'm getting between 18 and 20 mpg.

    Re: Gearing - 2021 3500 DRW RAM

I upgraded from a '14 2500 to a '19 3500DRW with the Aisin and the 4:10 gears to get a much bigger trailer.

Our 5th wheel WAS a Jayco Eagle 30'er at 10k lbs or so.

I noticed immediately that without the trailer, my RPM driving on the freeway was higher, and it kind of bugged me, even though the MPG was the same.

But on our 1st trip out, I realized the 4.10 gears were there for a reason on our first trip out.

Going up and downgrades that my 2500 would have constantly been shifting between 5th and 6th gear, the 3500 stayed in the flat part of the powerband no matter what.

Up, down the Cajon pass in CA, sideways, into the wind, crosswind in southern Idaho, gears didn't shift, and RPM stayed the same.

I only noticed that my MPG went down when the boost went up when the truck needed more power.

So, if you tow quite a bit, then that's what you want the truck to do.

There are always tradeoffs, but I found that the 4.10 made sense for us towing our 5th wheel.

I tow my camper at that weight, and I would not go backward on gear.

I had the 3:42 set (but with 68RFE), and it was slower getting rolling on the significant inclines.

Aisin has lower first gear, but I believe you would regret it.

    My current setup is perfect.

Did you ever swap out your gears?

    I wouldn't mind also.

Isn't the tire rim combo a taller unit on the DRW truck?

This is calculated into the overall gearing.

I have 3.42s in my truck and wish I had gotten the 3.73s.

The factory engineers do a pretty good job deciding the right ratios.
