Pushing Coolant Out Of The Reservoir Bottle

I have a 2017 Ram 3500 6.7 that just started pushing coolant out of the coolant reservoir.

First thought was a head gasket, but it's not running hot and hasn't been overheated, a stock boost.

The light will be on for low coolant in the morning, fill it back up to the mark, drive 30 minutes, and the level is at the top of the cap and pushing out again.

    Any ideas?

Also, what OAT coolant is everyone running?

I'm not paying dodge for coolant.

I really appreciate any help you can provide.

First I would test or replace the coolant cap to make sure it will hold 21 psi.

There are some less expensive OAT coolants available, but I always use the Mopar pre-mixed.

I am sure others will advise.

    I have a cap ordered.

    Hopefully, it's that simple.

Pushing Coolant Out Of The Reservoir Bottle

    Just an update.

So the first Ram dealer couldn't find anything wrong.

He said it was normal to lose some coolant due to the loads (gooseneck & Bobcat) I'm pulling.

I asked why is there combustion gas in the coolant and overheating?

Now, this is a "certified" diesel mechanic I'm talking to, and I can't make this up.

He proceeds to explain that piston blow is getting into the coolant, and it's perfectly normal.

Overheating is because I'm overloading it.

    I asked for my keys.

The second Dealer - Has the truck a day and calls and says the head gasket bad.

    A second WOW!!

It seems they let anyone be a mechanic nowadays.

Unfortunately, I had a similar experience when we had warranty work done on our 2018 Cherokee for electrical issues.

This was the second time we had it in for the same issue being a parasitic draw on the battery, causing it to drain overnight and not start.

The tech proceeds to tell me he checked it out, and the battery was low, so he charged it, and all is good.

I reiterated the issue, and he stuck by his story.

I happen to know a few people in that dealer's management, so I went directly to them and informed them that the tech's actions and responses are unacceptable and to have someone competent fix my vehicle.

The next tech found a dead cell in the battery, and the battery voltage sensor was bad.

I think they get it in their head they are talking to an idiot who doesn't know any better and run with it.

    Quite sad.

So nothing is ever easy with Dodge.

I need a few opinions from guys who have done the job.

The short story head gasket is bad.

Mechanic recommends installing ARP head bolts while he is doing the job.

Dodge tells me the bolts are $514.96, totally cool with that.

When I pick the truck up, I get hit with a $1100.00 labor bill (which I was never told about) + the bolts ($514.96).

Let me first say I have never installed ARP bolts on a 6.7L Cummins, but many other motors.

Reading ARP instructions, it only mentions dremeling 1 bolt, maybe 2.

With a labor rate of $200/hr (guessing), what took 5.5hrs?

    Thoughts?

I get the truck back, and it makes it less than a mile down the road, and it shuts down; it acts like it's running out of fuel...unreal!

It has to be towed back to deal.

$1100 is about right for labor on a head job with stud install.

You can expect to pay 8-10 hrs. labor.

I normally charge 10 hrs. on a head stud install.

The rocker box has to be machined.

Most of the time, the rockers' pedestals need to be machined a little bit.

Bottom tapping and cleaning out the holes.

All extra steps that aren’t required on a normal head job.

I’d say you came out alright on price if the job had been done properly.
