White Smoke With Rough Idle And Missing Sound

Guys/Gals, I really need some help here.

My truck is acting up, and I don’t know where to start.

So my father drove my truck home from a family vacation with my boat this past Thursday, and he said it ran fine the whole way.

My wife has been driving it all weekend while I’ve been out of town.

She called Saturday and said it’s smoking like crazy.

So I got home late last night and drove it to work today.

This morning it started up, and a decent amount of white smoke comes rolling out.

It’s rough at idle almost sounds like the lope tune is on. It clears up after about 30 seconds and sounds better, with less smoke too.

While driving to work, it’s missing in the lower RPMs.

It's not smoking the whole time I’m driving, but it’s definitely not 100% clear and definitely doesn't sound right.

So from what I’ve read, I fear injectors.

Here’s the setup on my truck:

    2016 RAM Longhorn
    80k miles
    Tuned by DRD
    5” straight pipe
    ARP head studs
    S&B intake
    Grid heater Delete
Pusher ram air with hot and cold side piping
    Stock fuel system

I changed the oil and fuel filters about 1 month ago, so they are basically new.

My father did fill up the truck on his way home, so maybe he got some bad fuel?

Do I need injectors at only 80k miles?

Should I stop driving the truck immediately?

    Please help!

    Thanks!

    Any trouble codes?

    Any unexplained coolant loss?

No, I forgot to mention no codes showing up on the MM3 and no CEL.

The coolant tank reads between min and max.

I drove it to lunch today, and it took longer than usual to crank over, and there seems to be some power loss.

Yes, it sounds like it could be a leaking injector.

I think a cylinder contribution test would be the next step.

I believe Alfa ODB software will perform this test, anyone knows for sure?

    Akbob

So would buying the alpha software and an OBD plug be cheaper and easier than getting someone near me to diagnose it?

Or is that software pretty complex?

Also, I took a picture of my MM3 screen showing rail pressure.

I was trying to watch it climb, and it looked like it was pretty close till I saw the max recorded numbers.

I see your actual “Rail Pressure” is over 5,000psi below desired. Mine is usually within 300psi.

Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable will shed some light on this.

If you go with Alfa ODB software, you will also need an ODBLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter, so you will be looking at around $160; however, we still need confirmation that it will perform the contribution test on your 2016.

    I wouldn’t drive it.

It sounds like the injector failed.

You can wash out the cylinder if it’s dumping too much fuel.

Thanks, I am thinking a failed injector would also account for the actual rail pressure loss correct?

Yes, it will cause low rail pressure.

Op can do a cylinder disable with a scanner or pull the valve cover and disconnect individual injector harness till he finds the bad injector.

You should find which injector it is without capping the individual fuel lines on the rail.

    Thanks for the help!

The only problem I see is that it’s hard to tell at idle that it’s off it sounds pretty normal if it’s not the first start of the day, and even then, it only lasts less than a minute.

I think the scanner would be the way to go.

Honestly, I’m tempted to buy 6 new injectors, maybe 30% over.

If I could isolate which one would it be wise to replace just the one or do all 6?

Think a bottle of Archoil injector cleaner would do anything?
