    68RFE Durability

    Okay, all.

I’m dying to run a hot tune, but I’m not trying to blow up my trans.

Any of you are running a hot tune having any issues?

What power levels would you all recommend staying at?

The truck is on 37s 68RFE on 3.73 gears.

If it were me, I probably wouldn’t run a hot tune.

Not saying you can’t, but a lot comes down to your right foot, and with 37’s, that already puts on added strain.

I typically keep mine between the tow and street setting.

Do you have any trans tuning, or is it 100% stock?

It’s not recommended to increase your HP by more than 120 HP unless you have head studs and beefed-up transmission.

Personally, I never go over 90 HP and stick with 30 HP when towing.

Keep it at 90hp or less.

Anything above that, and you risk burning up your trans.

Essentially 5th and 6th gears are overdrive, so I would keep it 4th and under if going to a higher setting for short periods.

Those clutch packs are a weak point.

Also, not to mention blowing a head gasket.

Running the 37s is putting a lot of strain on the OD when running highway speeds anyway.

    Re: 68RFE Durability

Back when I had a stock trans, I would tune only and bolt-ons.

I ran the 150-200 hp for almost 2 years, about 35kmiles.

Not sure how that trans didn't kill itself sooner, but she held up to the abuse of an 18-21-year-old.

Lots of guys say stock 68's suck but as long as you treat them good they'll last a while even with a little added power all depends how you drive.

Bigger tires and 68's don't mix me; personally, i think you shouldn't go over 33'-35' depending on gearing to have fun with the truck.

I tuned my truck at 8k miles and left it on a 120hp tune.

I second Gen swapped and built my trans at 20k miles, and my underdrive clutches were already starting to warp a little bit.

I abuse the hell out of my truck, though.

If you want long-term reliability on the trans, leave it 90hp or under.

    I recommend 60hp.

Agree 100% with Bob & Gerald.

Other than that --> It's obvious a lot of $$$$$$$$ have been spent - so drive her like a civilized human being, or you possibly might have time spent - picking her pieces up off the highway.

I know I sound like a stuck record - with what I just said - but I have never been one to work my A$$ Off for my $$$$ & spend it on performance upgrades - just to hot rod the HeII out of it & destroy it over a short period of time.
I guess it is just ramblings from an Older Fart who has learned very quick from his first idiotic mistakes!
Good Luck with your decision - Think this one through very carefully. (New Rams and Parts are not getting any cheaper)
