GM Tow Mirror Swap And Spot Mod

FIRST! I Know, I Know... I said 'GM' but, that is what they are.

    They are the Style 2.

They came from Boost Auto Parts and are plug-and-play!

Well, Boost does not offer actual puddle lights (they are wired to the rear-facing mini spots), nor do they offer a power fold option.

I decided the rear-facing spots would benefit me as reverse lights more than a "puddle Light" function.

So I will share what I did to swap this around and add actual puddle lights to the mirror.

I am not going into swapping the mirrors as that is straightforward.

My Truck is a 2017 3500 Laramie with all options on the mirrors.

If you do not have ALL options, only the options you have will be functional (as your stock mirrors are).

My first task was to determine the puddle light wires in the factory mirror.

In my case, it was = White plug -- BLU/YEL + And Black -

On the GM mirrors, it was = White Plug -- White + and Brown -

The Parts I found at Super Bright LEDs:
    1) Diode kit PN / MDK-1 (I will explain this later)
    2) LED lights PN / PLM-CW1W-CT to function as puddle lamps (Pictured)

Then I decided on the Placement.

To Disassemble the mirror, you can YouTube it.

It is a bit nerve-racking to pull on the glass as hard as you need to release it. (HINT - on the spot mirror pull at the center top and bottom NOT from the sides:)

The top glass is tricky too.

I worked the tabs that hold it on just a little to loosen it up then closed my eyes and pulled.

Once the glass is out, the rest is fairly easy.

So with the mirror apart I picked a place for the LED pods to fit and drilled into the cover.

Then to route the wire thru the mirror following the original harness.

All of the covers snap together so take your time.

Next is to terminate your connections.

First - I found the Trailer Back Up circuit in the power distribution box.

    F28 if I remember right.

Second - I spliced into the mirror harness isolating the mirror's rear facing spots from the puddle lamp circuit (White and Brown wires).

I then tied the LED pods to the Puddle lamp circuit and placed a spade connector on the Rear facing spotlight positive (White wire).

Grounds for both the pod and spots were terminated to the ground of puddle circuit (Brown wire). (seems to be fine so far).

Third - Here is where I opted to use the diode kit - It will allow me to use the spots with two functions.

One being as Reverse lights (as this post is explaining) and as an addition to the cargo lamps, or if you choose a toggle.

Once all terminations were made I tested all the functions. Low and behold, it all worked

In My Opinion, they came out very nice, and I have the features the truck came with the back (except power fold) plus added reverse illumination

I will begin the quest to add rear facing spots to cargo lamps and post when I get it done.
