    Intake Manifold Temp 220 degrees

    I have a 2018 5500 C&C 6.7 Cummims with the Aisin transmission.

I stated in a previous post that I went through a bunch of issues with different tuners and finally got fixed up by DRD.

The truck is all around 90 percent better except my intake Temps are climbing to what I think is very high. 220 even saw 238 the other day.

I changed the sensor and thought the issue was fixed, running around 120-140 degrees getting on it in around town.

I hopped on the highway and held 70 mph with nine psi of boost, and the truck starts climbing, kicking the fan on and off.

With the new sensor, it'll hit 215; the truck will kick the fan on, gets down to 130 140, then 20 seconds later back up over 200.

    What's a suitable manifold temperature?

Any ideas as to what's causing this?

I'm planning on pressure washing the CAC and de sooting the intake.

    Will soot cause these issues?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Intake Manifold Temp 220 degrees

is this measured by the air filter or pre or post intercooler?

Ok so the sensor I'm monitoring is in the intake manifold, back of the engine.

    Post intercooler.

Re: Intake Manifold Temp 220 degrees

Air temp is measured by the IAT sensor, screwed into the intake manifold, IAT will increase with boost, or heat soak when the engine is off, heat caused by the turbo is removed by the intercooler, so moving at higher speeds cools the IAT as well.

I would wash your heat exchanger, or intercooler, this is my 1st RAM truck in 11 years and haven't looked if they are air to air or water to air cooled. hopefully this helps.

    "From Cummins:

Maximum allowable air temperature rise over ambient at intake manifold 16.7 C [30 ºF]

Intake Manifold Air Temperature Warning Limit 74ºC [165ºF]

Intake Manifold Air Temperature Shutdown limit 76.7ºC [170ºF]

Diesel engines are best suited for air temperatures between 60 and 90°F [15 and 32°C]. Engines can withstand temperatures below or above this range, but their efficiency drops.

Intake Air That Is Too Hot

Engine horsepower fails about 1% for each 10 degrees of intake air temperature rise above 90°F [32°C].

An engine rated at 250 horsepower will develop only 240 horsepower when the intake air temperature is 130°F [54°C] with the same fuel delivery.

    Air That Is Too Cold

Cummins Diesels are rated on the basis of intake air at 85°F [29°C] temperature, but in most localities engines operate part of the time at temperatures of freezing or below.

A drop of 60 degrees in intake air temperature results in a 160-degree drop in compression temperature."

Re: Intake Manifold Temp 220 degrees

    Thank you for the reply.

Reading what you sent me, something is definitely off.

Looking at my intake temperature with the truck shut off, It read 136.

Unplugging it does not change value.

I will replace that shortly to see if it helps.

It really doesn't make sense driving on the highway at 70 with max airflow is when this truck starts acting up.

Even when it does act up, performance really doesn't change.

I washed the intercooler, and it helped a little.

I tested the charging system minus the intake manifold for boost leaks. None.

The truck runs amazing I'm just not sure where to go from here.

I did install a fleece turbo, but I don't think that has anything to do with it since it was happening before that.

I couldn't tell if it was in the tuning or not.

I'm pulling my hair out, battling with this truck.

    It only has 57k miles!

If the truck is running well, it sounds like a reference value or resistance number is off in the tuning/programming or a loose ground wire on that circuit.

Just by random chance, have you blown air thru the intercooler to see if debris or a rag is floating around?

As he said, I was running this on my RaceME Ultra, and it too was a pretty high number.

It almost like it wasn't very accurate.

I never noticed any performance losses tho.

I'll recheck it today as I have a pretty good drive and post my temps.

    Well I did 3 things.

My battery terminals on driver side battery.

    They were never tightened.

I belive that was the issue right there with the grounding as you said.

    Second 180 deg thermostat.

Third air duct under intercooler was missing push pins.

Did new IAT on box. Don't think it was bad.

Just did a 15 mile run at 70, no issues at all.

Manifold touched 140 for 40 seconds on a pull 70-80mph. Then went right back down.

Thank you all for your help so far but still let's post our manifold temperatures anyhow.

I will update in a few days if issue is fixed permanently or not.

I monitored my Intake Air Manifold Temperature (IAM-T) today.

I was running down the highway at 65 mph for just over 10 miles.

The outside temperature (ATA) was 40*F. My IAM-T is running approximately 60*F above ATA.

The yellow “maximum” numbers show the heat-soaked temperatures on startup after I parked and shut off the engine for about 20 minutes prior to this run.

Thought I would post these results for your information and reference.

I also included the Intercooler Outlet Temperature (IC-OT) and Turbo Inlet Temperature (VGT-IT).

    Yup.

These are pretty much what my truck is showing.

Seems like mine runs about 35 degrees above intake temp on the box.

I would imagine this is because I'm loaded down 17k pounds all the time since it's a service truck.
