    Torque Converter Unlocking?

My 4th Gen ram has been having a problem recently.

When I'm driving above 50mph, the RPMs seem to jump and then drop immediately and then return to normal.

It's hard to tell exactly what it's doing just by watching the MM3 while also driving.

I've started watching the torque converter slippage, and it usually sits around 0 +-5, but when the shudder happens, the RPMs drop to around -30.

My question now is, are these normal RPMs, or should I be concerned?

Just guessing, cuz your sig says 4" lift, that you have bigger tires, and guessing that you have 3.42 gears.

Big tires and 3.42s will make the 68RFE do all sorts of weird things, and it don't run near enough rpm at cruising speeds.

I have 35” it came with 34” would that cause a problem?

Plus I’ve had the lift since September and no problems up until 2-3 weeks ago.

Any thing over factory size tires with 3.42s and extra power is not 68RFE friendly.

Especially 5th and 6th gear clutches.

    I smoked 5th gear with 35s and 3.42s.

I'm not saying you've hurt anything.

I'm just saying the 68RFE and 3.42 gears was a bad combo for bigger tires, and the 68 does funny things searching for where it wants to be at certain rpms with that setup.

If you beat the tar out of it you'll eventually burn up overdrive clutches as I did.

You'll have codes if that was happening.

I think you just have a typical confused 68RFE searching for where it wants to be with a 3.42/35" setup.

I have seen bad throttle position sensors cause that on gas trucks.

Not sure how it works on the diesel.

Might be worth checking the potentiometer on the pedal.

    My truck does the same.

New transmission will be getting installed.

    6th gear OD clutches smoked.

My 2500 was doing the same thing, but it would throw codes for 5th and 6th OD clutches and now it won't even go into 5th or 6th gear.

So now I have a Revmax 700 on order hopefully this lasts awhile.

    Re: Torque Converter Unlocking?

Ray at DRD had a nice video about the stock 68RFE.

The general rules of thumb were don't run higher than 120hp tune. 30hp for heavy towing, 60hp for medium towing, and 90hp for light towing.

No burnouts, no boosted launches(good luck never trying this one), and especially no 4wd boosted launches. 1-4 are ok to romp on, and 5/6 are out of the question.

I have a Revmax stage 5 ultra low stall converter, valve body, thermostat delete, and mag hytec pan.

These mods are pretty essential for 35s with added power.

Though I will warn you about this setup.

The thermostat delete will not let your trans warm up in the winter, which makes the ultra low stall pretty aggressive.

Changing your stall requires a relearn when batteries are disconnected, and after a tune is flashed.

With all that said though, it may be to late in your case.

My truck would shudder in 5th, but only when going ***** deep.

    First I'd check fluid level.

Then the only other option, is drain it and see what you find.
