    Two Questions Here - CP4 - CP3 Injection Pumps

So this area is for fourth and fifth gents, although in 2019 the fifth gen so change the injection pump to the CP4.

Should we be breaking this in to two?

So 2019's and 20/20's have the CP4 injection pump and 2021 supposedly they went back to the CP3.

I have the opportunity to purchase a 2019 with the CP4 what is everybody's thoughts on the reliability of the CP4s versus the CP3s?

Is this truck being purchased from a dealer?

If so they can run a history on warranty claims to see if there has been previous fuel system repairs dealing with the CP4.

If not then you can check with a dealer and see if there has been any some dealers may charge for this.

If you do purchase it I would do a CP3 swap ASAP.

S&S diesel has some of the best conversion kits out there.

    Unless it's a steal of a deal I'd get a 2021.

CP4's have proven to not be near as reliable as the CP3. Dodge, Ford, GM all 3 have had CP4 problems.

If you go with the 2019 and warranty isn't a huge factor for you we can get you in an S&S CP3 conversion kit that requires no tuning, just replace and go.

To add to my post I have a friend has a 20 model and is on his 3rd CP4 pump along with a host of fuel system components.

I think he told me if it wasn’t warranty coverage it would be a bill around $7-9K.

He has plans on trading it to the new ‘21 with the CP3 then soon after purchase getting rid of the “bad stuff”.

    CP3 for the big win!

What makes the cp4 fail so much? I am curious about that.

    Thanks

Never had an issue out of my CP4 other than it was the loudest injection pump I've ever heard.

However, a non-warrantied failure is around $15k all in to repair. For the sake of argument, CP3 swap it or get a 21.

Internal cam design is metal on metal vs the CP3 that has a sleeve that sits on the plunger and the cam moves inside of it.

    Thanks for all the insight.

I will go 2021 or 2018 and avoid those years, as the purchase of the truck will likely eat any swap budget.

In common sense language, some of them decided to internally eat themselves.

I am going to steer away from a 19 or a 20 then.

I miss my 2016 and my 2002 just decided it didn't like life.

That’s a scary video , Cummins should be swapping these out to CP3s for the customers this is gonna be disastrous for customers later on down the road!
