    Whining Noise

After 3 hours of interstate driving, I slowed down and drove through town in gears 3-5 (25-45mph).

When I was in town I started noticing a whining noise that sounded like it was coming from behind the dash.

I turned off the radio and climate control to make sure it wasn't the fan (it was not).

The noise increased with engine speed.

It seemed to go away once I got back up to cruising speeds of 65+mph in 6th but maybe I just couldn't hear it over the increased road noise and engine drone at speed?

    Any ideas?

    No codes.

Temps and oil pressure were fine.

The truck seemed to drive just fine.

I don't ever recall noticing this fairly distinct noise though.

Is some pump going out soon maybe?

The noise going up and down with engine speed almost sounded like a very quiet supercharger whine if that helps describe it.

Thanks for any help or ideas.

I have had alternators sound like this when they were going out. Simple to check with ohm meter.

If this is the case I'll just wait and see if it gets louder and more obvious I suppose.

Thanks for the idea on this one. I'm not positive how to check that but I will look it up!

@ 6.7 coal train Most obvious with this one is watch batteries,
Check voltage at start up see how long it takes to recover. Lights dimming heater fan going slower, faster. This is a video on how to test.
    Hope this helps.

I'm leaning towards this as a solution.

Did you just buy straight from mean green (~$400)?

Quality alternator is probably worth spending for.

I believe it was around that.

I got it from Clayton over at Dudes Diesel Performance.

I did start with the idler first being it was the lesser of the two evils but as always it always is the more expensive part that wear out LOL.
