    4x4 Shift Grinding

Occasionally, after I shift into 4wd my front axel will grind until I slow to less than 5 mph then it will pop and lock into 4wd.

I can tell it's coming from the slide ring that is on the front axel, and it seems like it's not completely engaging until the truck is near stopped.

It happens when it's cold(20 degrees or colder.

Anything I should be concerned about?

Does anyone have a similar experience?

Update (2hrs later) I drove the truck and tried to shift into 4wd and now it's a very loud and aggressive grinding sound.

It won't shift into 4wd at all.

    2014 2500 SRW.

    Please help.

    Apologies if it's been discussed,

I couldn't find any posts or topics on the subject.

    Ben

    Update!

    I found out the problem!!

    I froze my front diff!

I went off-roading a few weeks back, and I had a few water crossings, and at one point, I sunk the front end in the water for about 15min.

Come to find out, my diff vent hose had ripped off and thus allowed water to get into the axel/diff.

A few freezing nights (I live in Alaska) and all the water mixed with the oil, and it froze up bad.

This prevented oil from lubricating the pinion bearings, and they seized up.

Luckily a good shop can get me taken care of and back on the road.

Let this be a lesson to everyone, check your vent tubes and check your fluids after every outing.

Good post! I'll second checking your vent tube.

Mine pulled off a couple winters back.

AK Bob, I am in Wasilla.

It was the cold Temps over New years weekend that froze up the axel.

I didn't drive the whole weekend and thus it just sat and froze.

Thank you for the PICS and Update.

I have in the past & also with the JUDGE - check the vent tubes @ every oil change & also spray them with a 100% silicone spray to help keep the rubber soft to avoid dry out and cracking.

Note to self & future experiences - Every time I totally submerge either Front Diff or Rear Diff - I am draining fluid and refilling.
This makes new covers with drain plugs so vital of a upgrade.
Even though I never go off-road - there will be that chance once & If the Tri-Toon is purchased - This now will be dictated on how bad the economy becomes & the state of our corrupt government.
    again for the PICS
