    G56 Clutch Job - Tips, Tricks, Tools, ETC

    All,
    Just getting started to begin my clutch journey on my '13 2500.

    I unfortunately do not have a lift; so will be doing this in my driveway over the course of X days.

    Figured I'd start a thread to capture the herd knowledge here. A few quick questions:

    1 - Is it necessary to divorce the transfer case from the transmission? I figure the less I take apart; the less I need to put back together. I don't see any leaks where the two join, so potentially see no need to divorce. Granted, I know that now I'm looking at a 400lbs monster; bringing me to point.
    2 - Jack. I found this nifty looking device, thinking it could be a savior: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...L5XBMT96&psc=1. Pricey no doubt; but less than 1/2 the cost of having a shop install the clutch.
    3 - What else should be replaced/looked at 'while you're there'. Obviously the rear main - but what else?

    Hey Steve, I hope you will have a lot of extra hands to help you with this clutch replacement?

    Personally I rather pay a reputable shop to replace it.

    It will be rough with the truck up on ramps doing it in your driveway with very little clearance.

    What kind of clutch are you going with?

    I did mine a couple years ago in the garage with no lift.

    Some tips:

    - Get some help. It's definitely a two person job getting the trans bolted back up to the engine.

    - Get a nice trans jack. That Amazon one probably isn't going to cut it...the trans is a beast. I ended up renting one from my local rental place.

    - Separate the t-case from the trans. It's only six nuts and will make your life MUCH easier.

    - Replace the rear seal while you are in there. I didn't and it started leaking shortly after.

    I will second OneTon’s comments.

    Separating the trans form the transfer case will make it easier.

    Getting it out is usually a one person event, getting it back in may take two.

    You may want to consider getting the truck as high off the ground as possible at all four corners or slightly higher in the rear to wrestle it out.

    I have used an atv Jack with a wooden cradle with good results in past vehicles.

    Thanks for the help so far!

    To answer a few questions:

    1 - I'll have some limited help.
    2 - Going with the SBC single disc. After chatting with them given my tunes, etc - they believe the clutch to be sufficient.
    3 - I'll take a look at different jacks. I already own an ATV jack, so may try to weld up a custom holder for it.

    Just a quick update -

    We are in labor, and the birth is progressing well.

    The one tcase bolt at the top on the passenger side was a pain to access but got the tcase out easily

    Have the jack supporting the trans now - I need to finish disconnecting the wires and need to remove the slave cylinder.

    I gotta say that I'm shocked as to how rust free the underside of the truck is - considering I live in the NE.

    Will advise as the day goes on.

    Got the DMF off. I got a piece of flat bar and drilled it such that it would bolt across the flywheel and hold it in place....avoiding it crashing down on me.

    Flywheel and pressure plate are toasty, but the disc still has plenty of material on it. Garbage either way...







    Need to get cleaned up and ready for the Holiday.

    Will knock out the install over the weekend.

    Trans is back in.

    Fighting a cold, so gonna finish things up over the next few days.

    I cannot stress enough how much the 911 motorsports transmission jack adapter made this job possible/easier with only one person in the driveway.

    It took me 4 attempts to get the trans stabbed in, the a little bit of wiggle to ensure I had seated the dowel pins and had contact all the way around 20mins or so - not bad.

    Ultimately the scariest part was installing the new flywheel.

    I wasn't 100% sure I'd be strong enough at weird angles to get it seated before getting a bolt in.

    It's done - hopefully will get the transfer case installed tomorrow and will then start replacing the pinion seals on the axles.
