Just to share my experience I did it with no bad effects.
I was getting a CEL all last winter clearing codes about every week I think it was the bolt coming loose..

I may take fire for saying this but you can unhook your grid and just start it in cold weather. I do not have a CEL when I do this with my truck 2013. It’ll start fine even in below 0 temps. I’ve got all my positive/power wires removed from batt/solenoid/grid

Is your truck push button start?

So I did some testing this morning, you can disconnect the power wire to the grid heater solenoid and start the truck with no cel. I did not try disconnecting the coil wires but as long as the coil wires are on the solenoid the truck thinks it’s turning on the grid heater. When I had the power wire disconnected the truck started fine and had no surging at start up and voltage never dropped below 11.8 with grid heater power wire connected the voltage will drop to about 11.4 and take a little to come back up and until the voltage gets above 12.0 voltage the truck has that surging noise.

Negative- 2013 with key tip

I think you can only do that with non push buttons.

My push button would pop code every time it got below 55. Push button makes you press it a second time before starting if its in the wait to start temp range.

so on my 14 with the push button you can hit it twice and it will do the pre heat and then start.

What year is your truck? The pcm will not think the heaters on by disconnecting it at the heater or the solenoid. The system detects faults in the heater circuit by either voltage drop or amp draw I can’t remember which one.

The solenoid is not gonna take enough of either to satisfy the pcm. The heater needs to be activated to drop voltage or draw the amps.

You can probably get around it by turning the key straight to start (bypassing the wait to start) but if it gets the command from the pcm and doesn’t see a response it’s gonna pop a cel.

Now I don’t know for certain about earlier trucks I know 14 up use this strategy I would have to do more digging to verify early trucks.

Yeah but it popped a code everytime on mine. Mines an 18.
