    Cold Months Of Winter

    Winter is here.

    What does everyone do?

For me, I've been in the temps of -20 at night and the highs around -5.

The cold Alaskan winters' joys, January will be the coldest for us, with the lows down in the -30 to -50.

This will be my first winter with my diesel, but not my first diesel I've owned.

I run the EDT winter additive from hotshot. I keep the truck plugged in when not running.

I keep the def tank at halfway so when it freezes; it doesn't mess anything up when it expands.

I let her warm-up for 15-25 min before I take off. the grill cover will stay on till next April when it starts to warm up.

How are the tuned trucks in the cold months?

I will be doing the MM3 with a 30hp tune and the delete pipe with the flow twister muffler, so it isn't too loud.

I know it will probably take a little longer to warm up.

I know doing the delete will be better since the truck doesn't get up to full temp in the cold months.

On a real note, when it's -40 outside, nothing wants to start, LOL, but nothing stops here.

That's just normal temps for the winter.

Those temps are only last for a week, then it goes back to the -10 to -20.

1.) Very nice truck Arctic picks!
2.) I'm from Jersey so my knowledge of 'cold' is near non existent. It seldom gets below 20F.
    3.) Welcome to the forum!

@AK Bob might have a few tips for ya.

Look into running the HSS (Winter Blend) fuel additive - Its shown some good results as far as Youtube is concerned.

I run their EDT summer additive.

Is she kept in the garage over night? or outside?
If outside - ya might think about a quick connect trickle charger tied into your engine block heater during the over night period - Your batteries will thank you!

This might help a little bit - with some ideas.

Sounds Like you are as prepared as ya possibly can be!

Only thing left I can think of is possibly run a 5W-40 HDEO or even a 100% synthetic 15W-40 oil.

The HDEO 10W-30 is now very popular & becoming even more popular within the cold regions.

    Dang that's cold! LOL.

We get about a week or two of that super cold weather too, but it's usually only like -20 at the coldest.

I'm still searching for a grill cover that isn't dealer priced LOL..

As long as you keep her plugged in when she isn't running, it should be alright combined with everything else you got going on.

Do you have battery insulators or warmers?

I have heard they can make a difference in those super cold nights.

    I guess I'm wrong.

I was understanding it would be best using 0w-40 sync oil in that cold of climate?

Sounds like you are set up and doing everything correctly.

It gets quite a lot cooler in Fairbanks than Anchorage but then your summers are warmer.

The DRD tunes are a great choice and will work great for you.

With the tunes you will also gain the exhaust brake auto on feature.

If you leave your exhaust brake on it will warm up faster.

The only downside to doing this is the loud turbo whistle that will sound like a jet engine taking off during cold high idle.

The twister muffler should help some but if you don’t have understanding neighbors you may want to leave the exhaust brake off until you drive.

I totally forgot about the HDEO 0W-40 - due to it is not sold in our region (Never gets even close to -20F below)
I feel would be a great choice if Available!

I thought I remember seeing one HDEO in the 0W-40 --> Shell Rotella T6 0W-40
Maybe Amsoil has a HDEO 0W-40?

One thing for sure - If I lived in that type of climate & she was exposed to those elements 24/7.
I would search for the Lowest W rating HDEO (PAO) = Extreme Cold is where the PAO oils really excel in Flow & Pump ability properties.
