    Fuel Delivery Issue

I’ve read many similar posts on here about P0254 and P0088, but after my truck being in a shop for 5 days and $2000 later with no improvements, I’m guessing I may have a brainbuster for some of you.

    It’s a deleted, MM3 tuned 2014 2500.

The shop changed out the fuel control solenoid and fuel pressure sensor.

This improved the idle slightly but would not build over 13,100 psi rail pressure.

Plenty of boost pressure, no smoke. (Fuel filters both have less than 1k miles btw).

Today, I put a race plug in the fuel rail to eliminate the possibility of a weak blow off.

Well, now the truck reads 29, xxx psi rail pressure all the time, and runs like a dog.

Sounds like a tired 12 valve.

I did my best to inspect all plugs and wiring, and now I’m shooting in the dark.

Could my return line be obstructed?

Why else would I be building 29k at idle?

    Any ideas will help, thanks!

Your fuel control actuator is shot sounds like!

It’s on the CP3- buy one direct from local Cummins for best price.

I can get you one as well if you don’t have a Cummins dealer local.

The dodge dealers are a rip off for these.

Or is that the “solenoid” you mentioned?

I believe that is 1 of the two components replaced.

You can test it yourself easy.

Start the truck and unplug the connector while it’s running.

See if there is a change in noise.

Typically the FCA will peg at 29k and rattle like a 12v when it’s bad/removed.

Any idea what brand they installed?

Aftermarket for these often are bad out of the box.

    Bosch makes the OEM sensor.

It was OEM (from dodge, $507). This is the plug at the very back of the fuel rail, near the firewall, correct?

So, per the receipt, I believe that’s the “sensor” they replaced, and the “solenoid” appears to be directly underneath the alternator.

The "Solenoid" is the actuator it sounds like.

Depending on the year the CP3 is near the alternator.

    Thank you.

I’m quickly learning much more about all of this than I had hoped I would! Haha.

Don’t get me wrong, I love learning about my rig, but doing it out on the road is quite stressful.

Tonight, with the race plug still installed I uninstalled the tuner, and still 29, xxx psi at idle.

I have to agree your initial thought about the regulator still sounds like the culprit (although since it’s brand new OEM @ $500 I’d expect it to not be defective).

Leads me to wonder about wiring, and checking the voltage at the plug (which I know nothing about).

Or fuses and relays, not sure what system these are part of.

I’m not saying it can’t happen but I have not heard an electrical issue with these. $500 is nuts for that actuator.

I sell the same one shipped for $190 (new Bosch).

Install is simple as you likely saw with just 3 torx.

If it were me I would find a local O'reilly/Autozone etc that has one and swap it in the parking lot.

As long as they didnt strip your torx head it should come loose no problem.

Typically once the actuator is removed if you shake it in your hand and it rattles then it’s bad.

That’s typical but not 100% guarantee.

Chasing electrical would be my last resort.

I will give that a shot.

Yes, I nearly fell over when I saw the cost, what a bunch of criminals.

Would you agree that the truck should run fine with the race plug in the fuel rail if that solenoid/pressure controller was working properly?

A friend of mine is trying to tell me it NEEDS the pressure relief plug, and I feel that it’s just there for extreme pressure spikes, aka, rarely bypasses fuel.
