Electrical Engineer Looking To Get Into Diesel Tuning

    Like the title says.

I'm an electrical engineer and I'm interested in understanding all the fine details in diesel tuning.

The best resource I can find is High Performance Acadamy (HPA).

    Has anyone used them?

I think they use EFILive in their curriculum.

If I look at what EFILive sells direct I get the feeling I could RTFM and skip the HPA.

I'd like to hear from the tuners themselves, how'd you get into the business?

Where did you learn your trade?

My test bench if you will is my 2010 Ram 2500.

Right now it's got a Mini Maxx on it, which I think is pretty worthless as a tuning tool.

It'd probably work just fine to display things like EGTs though.

What are the routes to learn with MM3 and EZLink?

Does anyone know if AlfaOBD can disable the TPMS?

    Thanks in advance!

Alpha OBD can disable or at least lower TPMS Thresholds.

I would look at the HP Tuner platform to get started.

I have been interested but done nothing due to

    1. Lack of knowledge. The current guys creating files so not give out their trade secrets and rightfully so.

    2. EPA is on the prowl and in my opinion is not a quickly growing market due to big brother.

I hope you have success finding the information you're looking for.

    Keep us posted.

Probably get more info on Cummins forum than here.

Efi live guys seem to be more giving with info than MM3 guys.

With warp you need to start by getting a dongle and downloading software.

    Thanks for the replies.

I think that there are guys that feel like they're slitting their own throat when teaching others their trade skills.

Maybe that's true, but generally I feel open source platforms and attitudes progress the fastest.

There will always be people who are not tech savvy that will be customers.

Not every Duder with a 'Puter can tune their own truck, I would argue that most can't.

Even if they try, it probably ends up driving more business to the people that have legit skills.

TexNeck, I agree the EPA is on the prowl, but the emissions intact tuning market seems to be a big growth area right now.

Is the EPA targeting those guys as well?

The deleted tuners seam to have gone underground, but the tuning industry is still alive an well from what I can tell.

Chrisn162001, Is the Cummins forum you're talking about a different forum on IGOTACUMMINS, or a different site altogether?

Is warp tuning what the RaceME Ultra platform uses?

Even if I don't get direct help learning to tune from a current tuner, I'd still like to hear stories about how people got into the tuning sector of the industry.

Did they build their own test bench on a sheet of plywood with junkyard ECUs?

Did they get mentored by another tuner while doing mechanic work at a diesel shop?

Where they forcibly abducted by diesel exhaust breathing aliens that needed more soot to survive?

Is it a futile effort for an established electrical engineer in an unrelated industry to even bother trying?

It’s not slitting ones own throat so much as the countless hours and money spent learning to give it away to someone for free or even a low cost.

Cummins forum is totally different forum.

I'm interested in what you find out as well.

I've already looking into tuning the MM3 to get the desired results and I too came from a Mini Maxx that was only good at throwing codes and derating my truck until I cleared them.

I wound up going with a MM3 tuner with files written by an expert (DRD).

While I'd still like to learn, I can't say there is any throttle position I feel could be improved upon with a tuner anymore and my need to tune it myself has lessened.

Now it's more of a desire to tinker, LOL.

I'm not convinced the Mini Maxx is completely useless.

It did allow me to successfully fully delete the truck.

It provides gauges for EGT, Transmission pressure, and Transmission gear and lockup.

It completely disable the TPMS, and adjusted my speedo for the larger wheels/tires.

The problem is the canned tuning.

Being locked into those tunes really sucks.

No vendor support is a big problem.

When I add bigger injectors, heater grid delete, 2nd Gen swap and other mods, I'll have to go with a different tuner.

I enjoy programming and tuning electronic devices.

    I do it professionally.

Truck tuning is something that I think I would enjoy as a hobby/side gig.

I see that the path you take on tuning depends on what hardware is best for the application.

Since I already have a display for EGT and other parameters, I'm thinking about options that don't require to be actively plugged into the OBDII port.

I think EFILive, Smarty, and EZlynk can do that.

    Maybe others as well.

    Thoughts?

Just rip the bandaid off and throw the Mini Maxx in the trash?

Re: Electrical Engineer Looking To Get Into Diesel Tuning

    2 month update.

I did get the H&S unlocked and started poking around with MCC.

I've been working with a tuner that I bought the MCC unlock, transmission tune, and Engine tune package off of eBay.

I am not impressed. His trans tune was worse than the H&S canned tune.

After a couple hours of looking at his tune through MCC I was able to figure out why it was hunting for gears.

I'm not too salty about all that, but I've realized how powerful these tuners are, and how a guy has to be careful or you can really mess up your truck!

Anyways, I'm willing to share what I learned with this guy and hopefully he doesn't blow up the next guys trans.

What are some rules of thumbs when tuning a stock CR 6.7 truck?

Is there anything like you shouldn't exceed X amount of timing at Y RPM with more than Z amount of Fuel and boost?

Head studs will allow +X, +Y, +Z ect????

Still looking for help and dabbling in this H&S MCC platform before I invest in something newer.

    Thanks!
