Thread: Turbo Build - 63 Holset Cheetah?

Turbo Build - 63 Holset Cheetah?

I've got a 2015 RAM, deleted, studded, injectors, Firepunk 47re swap with anteater pro, exhaust manifold with a Fleece S467/83 turbo.

I will be moving this set up over to more of a daily driver with medium towing, typically around 14k on a gooseneck.

Revmax is building me a 68re, and I want to retain the exhaust brake function.

Has anyone used the 63 holset cheetah for towing or any other turbos you guys would recommend for towing/daily driver applications?

Fleece Cheetah is a great choice.

Lots of people run this charger for towing and retaining exhaust brake.

That charger will still support 700+hp.

What style manifold are you on?

You are wanting to go back to VGT?

Thanks Tex, I believe it is the steed speed 4th gen from Firepunk.

I'm looking at going back to VGT, I want to retain the exhaust break, since when I tow, it tends to be more towards the medium to heavy side.

Just nice having it when I hit a good grade.

You could second gen swap a S463 and add a PacBrake exhaust brake.

Might be similar in cost and stay off the VGT.

What is the big negative about the VGT? Is the second gen swap more desirable for towing?

The big negative is the actuator that is needed to operate the VGT.

The electronics are known to fail pretty often.

The aftermarket turbos (Cheetah and screamer) seem to have better longevity than the factory Holset due to design changes.

A drawback with them is the drive pressure is still much higher which is a concern if you are looking to make added power.

The second gen swap moves the turbo to the center of the manifold so it helps keep temperatures and flow more consistent across the cylinders.

This keeps drive pressure down relatively speaking.

There is a wide range of turbos to choose from that use the T4 exhaust that come with your typical T4 2nd gen manifold as well.

Depending on your power goal a third gen swap is a good route as well.

They are a little more cost effective and with the aftermarket manifolds flowing well also and come with the T4 exhaust also.

Re: Turbo Build - 63 Holset Cheetah?

    Thanks for the information Tex.

I was reading up on pacbrake last night.

I’m not too worried about adding all kinds of extra power, I’m primarily just looking for towing efficiency.

Are there any vendors that sale swap kits?

What are the drawbacks of doing 2nd or 3rd Gen swap?

Id be happy to get you quoted for whatever you’d like. We have access to over 800,000 parts.

The main “drawbacks” are you lose your exhaust brake and you have to be tuned/deleted. These are debatable as a drawback as it depends on the individual and truck scenario. I’ll shoot you a PM
