    RAM 68RFE Hard 5-4 Downshift?

    @DRD deleted since 45k, 65k on it now and a 68RFE trans.

Not one issue today leaving work, and I started the truck warmed up for 4-5 mins with the exhaust break on.

I pulled out onto the highway with normal driving, approached the traffic light, let off the gas, and let it downshift with the exhaust brake.

Tough bang from 5 into 4, which I had never noticed before.

It wasn’t a one-time thing, as it does every 5-4 downshift now.

If I remember correctly a damaged 4th gear clutch retainer snap ring will cause that with no codes.

I’ll have to check my notes tomorrow though.

So I reflashed the tune to the truck last night and put about 20 miles of 1-6 and back 6-1 at/under 30% throttle with no issues.

I’m hoping this was maybe a glitch.

I did drive the truck to work today, but it only went through the gears twice, as it’s all highway for me.

So I have some miles yet for the trans to relearn completely.

Honestly, even all the upshifts are smoother, and I didn’t think they were harsh before.

I wonder if I rushed when I let the trans relearn after the initial tune.

Hi, did you figure out how to resolve this?

Mine (all stock, no tunes to be re-flashed on it) just started the same thing, REAL hard bang when decelerating, and it shifts from 5th down into 4th.

Everything else is fine, just that 5-4 downshift when slowing down.

I'm desperate to know what to do, afraid to keep driving like this.

Any help you can give is much appreciated!

    -Ben

My truck started doing the same thing a month ago, only when the exhaust brake was on.

I reached out to DRD and Revmax (which have a revamp valve body) they both suggested a refresh, so I did and did the drive relearn process.

Knock on wood; it seemed to fix the issue and hasn't returned.

Not sure why it started doing it.

I figured if it were hardware, it would have come back.

So one thing I have not tried is a trans-relearning process; how do I go about doing this?

I have an MM3, and the truck is a 2020.

Begin the initial drive learn cycle.

You must keep the throttle below 50% at all times during this cycle.

Drive the vehicle for a MINIMUM of 3 days.

The truck must be allowed to rest overnight and go from HOT to the COLD engine and transmission temperatures.

During this time period, it is best to have a MINIMUM of 200 miles.

    STOP AND GO driving.

Highway driving does not count and will not drive learn the transmission.
