    Water Pump Pulley Fell Off

So, I have had a new water pump sitting on the shelf in my garage for a while (2 years) and today I decided it was time to replace it.

Mine was one of the recall trucks, no weep hole.

I also had the coolant filter kit sitting on the shelf so that went on too.

All went fine until I started the truck to run it up to temp and check the coolant level.

After about 10 min I hear a sound and something rubbing.

I look under the hood and see the belt is completely loose.

I shut off the truck and look further and find the water pump pulley is off WTF...

I bought this from Geno's so it is not an eBay buy or something like that.

    Anyone ever experience this?

I have a Gates pump and new belt on order from Geno's but truck is out for a while.

That is so frustrating - but like above - glad nothing was tore up in the end.

Hope the next install is much more successful.

    Crazy!

Actually better it happened in the driveway and no additional damage.

Wondering how the pulley is normally attached to the shaft?

Yes for sure, It looks like a press fit only. The pump spins freely by hand so I don't think it seized up, but guess I will see when it comes apart.

Please keep us posted on what you find. I guess you could drill and drive in a roll pin. Any chance you could return it for a refund?

I hope it is just a fluke.

I will post some pics and let you all know what I find.

I have not asked Genos for a refund and bought it in April of 2018 figuring I would have it on hand in case the factory recall one went out.

I figured the 1 year warranty is long gone by now.

My fault for not installing it when I got it.

I changed out the pump yesterday, Had to go with a NAPA pump since my gates one wasn't going to arrive for another 8 days which meant it it would be two more weeks before I could install it, called the stealership and they wanted $268 for the pump .

No idea why the pully came off. Pump is in perfect shape, the pully slides on about 1/3 of the way on the shaft without any issue, must just be pressed on. Here is a couple pics of the pump that failed, you can see some galling on the shaft, something had to cause some resistance for the pully to spin off the shaft or it was just a bad pully or shaft that did not fit right.

The NAPA pumps do not have the weep hole in case anyone was wondering.

Figure I will replace the pump at some point soon with the gates one after it arrives.
