Question Noobiest Of All Noob Questions

Don't know that I'll ever stop learning about this truck I bought in February! New to Rams and Cummins.

It's a 2006 Mega Cab 2500 5.9. It has the tow tune on it currently (PPE Xcelerator Power Programmer).

Should I still be hitting the tow button on the gear shift for my heavy loads or did the programmer fix that too?

Just trying not to mess up the truck!

Also I am looking at possibly switching to the ARP head studs.

Will my truck then be ok if I play around with the other two (performance and extreme) tunes on the programmer?

    Not trying to break something.

    Thanks!

    Only my opinion

It depends on the specifics of the tunes you have... but I would say yes, continue using tow haul mode when towing.

The head stud necessity question will also depend on the specific tune. If you have a tune that builds excessive cylinder pressure at lower RPM you could risk blowing the head gasket. That being said the 5.9 engines were a lot easier on head gaskets than the 6.7. You generally have more room to play before it becomes a concern.

You still need to be wary of the transmission when playing around on the hotter tunes.. if its stock and you are running significantly more power than stock through it you are on borrowed time.. you right foot has a lot to do with it as well. Also need to keep an eye on EGT's, there are plenty of stories out there of 5.9 engines dropping valve seats and in my opinion that has at least something to do with running high hp tunes and subjecting the valve seats to extreme temperatures and quick temperature swings... eg beating on it before its warmed up... shutting it off right after a hard pull with no idling for cool down ect...

My advice would be to leave the stock head bolts in place, run the milder performance tunes and enjoy your truck. If your going to beat on it on the higher hp level tunes... budget for a built trans.

Sounds like I'm not going past the tow tune!

I'm looking at getting a camper which would mean towing at max capacity.

Stock head bolts will be fine long term?

If you have a stock Turbo then stock studs are fine.

If you have a larger charger pushing high boost (regularly over 40psi) then you will want to consider them for peace of mind.
