Blow Out Tire = Bodyshop Repair And Now A Def Issue

Hi all...long time member now retired so hope to get more involved. I need your help...briefly...rear tire blew out and as well as ruining the bed side panel and wheel well stuff etc the tire ripped out my Diesel and def filler pipes.

It took 5 months to source replacement filler tubes via insurance.

Now I have truck back the engine is throwing a code ' def pressure high'.

The dealer is now saying I need new def pump and its ridiculously expensive.

My issues are that it was perfect before the blow out and stood in body shop for several months.

Truck seems to run OK and no warning about 5 mph or anything - just this code.

Second I am not confident on this diagnosis from dealership.

All they did was read code and state new pump required.

Couldn't this be just an injector or an electrical issue with the pump?

Can you help with how I can check what's really happening.

    2016 3500 Laramie Longhorn 70k miles.

Insurance declining it was anything to do with blow out so I'm looking at over 2k bill?

    Thanks.

    Welcome officially!

I don't have much experience with DEF trucks but with DEF having a shelf life that it makes sense that sitting idle for months could cause problems.

Maybe picking up a used pump would be a cheaper fix for this.

Unfortunately the pump, internal filter, and pressure switch are all tied into one and inside the def tank.

One of those is the problem and yes it's spendy.

Here is where I'd lose my head is on your insurance company, because it more than likely has everything to do with your blowout.

If it took the fill tube, debris surely got in the tank causing a pump failure.

    Fight that!

Or as it sat around for months waiting to get fixed it could of got even more debris.

Dealer or body shop/mechanics should go to bat for you on this as well!

Sorry to hear this! I too would be upset with insurance because this is a result of the blow out since it was running fine before. If you're mechanically inclined I'd start by:
    Draining the DEF tank
Pull the DEF injector from the tank
Vacuum out the tank the best you can
Rinse the DEF tank out with distilled water WHILE THE INJECTOR IS OUT
Flush any water out with fresh DEF fluid
Inspect DEF injector for any type of debris/crystallized build up
    Reinstall DEF injector
Fill DEF tank with quality/in date DEF fluid.

Again, this is simply what I'd do if I were in your situation.

I hope they get it fixed for you!

Great advice from @cumminsdieselfreak I would try this first.

If this doesn’t fix it and the insurance refuses to pay, I would go with @Murph suggestion.

Don’t pay to fix it, pay to remove it!

I for sure agree with all the delete suggestions, but you cant go back to stock without working components, and I strongly feel this should be covered.
