My parents have this same setup and my stepdad loves it.

Nice and lightweight for the retired folks to swing around.

I've been seeing 5th wheel hitches pop up on facebook marketplace like crazy lately for pretty cheap $300-$400.

I run the B&W Companion for the factory puck system.

Great hitch, very solid and gives me plenty of clearance with the MegaCab but it is VERY heavy to pull out and take out of the bed.

If I get a few more years on me then I will be leaving it in permanently.

I hear you, I have the same hitch, works great and very solid but I leave it in year round due to the weight.

If I do end up with the Companion Hitch - I will probably leave it in full time and invest in a fold up or roll up bed cover.

    Absolutely.

I have the TruXedo Lo Pro soft roll up cover.

It covers up my in bed 50gal fuel tank, storage box and hitch, protects them from the elements and prying eyes yet allows for easy access to all.

Also - Having the extra weight in the back during the winter months can only help a bit with extra traction with those snowy & icy conditions.

Keeping the Hitch away from the elements - if left in 24/7 - will be my main goal - hence the need for the sliding or folding bed cover.
