    Unplugging EGR

    Hi quick question.

    EGR started acting up.

Planning on deleting soon but waiting to get the funds for a tuner.

Would it be possible to unplug the egr and throttle valve and run the truck until I can get the tuner and do the block off plates and such?

If so what all would need unplugged?

Not worried about a CEL as long as the truck doesn't go into limp mode.

Would all 4 plugs need unplugged or just the egr and throttle valve?

    Thanks.

I believe it will go into limp mode without a tuner.

Can you gives some details about your truck?

You can unplug the EGR. You will get a check engine light on the dash. You can still drive true truck fairly normally but it will have slightly derated power. It will not go into full limp mode unless something else is also wrong. Back in the day many guys tried to 'trick' the ECM in think the EGR was connected but bypassed. They all ended with the same result as noted above.

    Thanks for the reply.

Probably going to clean it out one good time then leave it unplugged till i get the tuner.

This 11 mpg is hurting my wallet. -

I believe 2012 and older 4th gen trucks can run unplugged EGR's w/o a tuner.

They will give a CEL but it will not go into limp mode.

I never owned a pre 2012 4th Gen though so I have no personal experience.

Only thing you can unplug is EGR valve itself but that likely wont solve the issues you're having.

Went ahead and unplugged it, CEL came up as noted.

MPG increased from 11 to 16.

Feels like throttle response is tiny bit better.

Crazy how much these emissions take away from the motors true potential
