    Exhaust Brake Squeal, Whistle

My exhaust brake 90% of the time has a whistle noise.

Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

If you are not deleted and is making more noise, high pitch, squeal, notice more exhaust smell in the cab at idle etc.

Look close at the emission pieces on engine.

You have gaskets where the EGR connects etc...

Follow the exhaust manifold and look at all exit air pathways.

You can usually see a bunch of soot that has coated outside of a bad gasket.

The back side/exhaust side of the turbo down pipe, inspect it for a crack check from the turbo down to the DPF.

Regular driving you wont really hear those issues if you have them. but exhaust brake on the sound/harmonics and flow changes.

    Thanks a Million.

    This is what I suspected.

I will look closely at those pieces you talked about.

Of course the engine was detailed before I bought it.

So I am watching it closely for any signs of oil.

I will look for soot too.

If as suspected, a exhaust leak.

What is the long term effects on the other engine components?

Well if we are talking about a leak that is on the exhaust side I would think that if there is a leak big enough that creates a pressure drop enough the sensors that are down stream I would think would pick up.

Get a 4 foot piece of heater hose and you can use it as a stethoscope and listen to narrow the sound down.

Does this sound worse when the truck is cold?

What are you using for a monitor, out of curiosity?

For reference, the VGT factory programming has it at 85% closed under most circumstances.

However, while still intact, this is generally not noticeable.

Once straight piped, you'll definitely notice.
