Re: FCA Letter: Diesel Engine Calibration - Your Vehicle Must Be Repaired

I dont have the courage (or finances) to let a dealership touch my vehicle.
Did the recalls myself (out of pocket) and my truck's never once been flashed or touched by a dealership since the day I took delivery in 2016.

    I wish you luck Sir.
Before you drop it off take pictures of the truck inside & out and under the hood, write down the mileage, take note of the before & after MPG and DEF usage if possible.
    Good luck,

Right, like I already said, I'm not doing it.
I googled FCA VB6 recall and had a bit of reading. Apparently there are 2 different VB6 recalls, one is for SO owners, which also includes the 68 RFE transmission recall - who generally are happy after the recall and they report better shifting and no change (or no noticeable change) in fuel consumption or power, and then there's a VB6 for HO owners (my truck) who are generally very unhappy after this recall and report poor fuel economy, very rough idle, starting issues, engine noise, etc...
Nope they're not touching my truck.

If you bring your truck in for service or any kind, you will receive the VB6 recall as it is a federal emissions recall.

They will do it and not ask you about it.

There are plenty of OBD-II port lock-out devices available, both passive and the type you can lock with a key.

Note that much like firearms... the flash itself isn't always a bad thing... it's the person doing the flash that's dangerous.

For reasons beyond my understanding it's often the BCM (body control module) that gets trashed when dealers (attempt) to flash a vehicle.

You can’t even bring a truck to a dealer in my area with that.

They plug a Micropod II into it just to create the service ticket, and when the computer's down, they don’t know what to do.

It’s incredible just how lazy they have become.

    Thanks for that information @cumminsturbofreak
Thank goodness I've never had to bring my 2016 to the dealer, but if I did they would certainly have a party with her.

I look at it this way...
My truck has been perfect (in diesel standards) since the day I took delivery on April Fool's Day 2016.
There is nothing the service department could possibly do other than 'inject' a bunch of problems and headaches that would plague me to the point of putting it up for sale. I know the drill all too well.

    Good luck with your 2020.

    I'll second what @cumminsturbofreak said.

The store I work at won't even look at the truck if they can't plug into it but it's never been a concern.

When I had my 4th Gen, I never had issues with them unplugging my programmer or my power steps to access the OBD port.

It really isn't that big of a deal.

What exactly do the "MUST" modify?

If it's something critical that will result in engine failure if left unfinished, then I will bring it in.

I might sound paranoid but to me "The engine control software in your vehicle must be modified with a new calibration to improve emission control performance" this sounds like they're wanting tighten up truck's emission to comply with some newer BS regulations?

It will surely come at the cost of fuel and or DEF consumption.

I like the way my truck is right now, it is a much better vehicle than my 5.7L Tundra, and the fuel economy is better as well.

It will only get better once I delete all the crap.

The last thing I need/want right now if for them to **** up a perfectly functioning truck.

Any ideas what this is really about?

Sounds to me like a buncha horsehockey.

    How does the truck drive?

Far as I'm concerned if it ain't broke dont “fix” it.

    Good stuff.... Truckers bring it

    It's not that simple.

This is not one of those "eh maybe I'll do it" type things.

This is a federal level emissions recall.

One that stop-sales these vehicles at the dealer; we literally cannot sell a Heavy Duty if the VB6 is open on the VIN. As a dealer, we have to comply with the recall, so as I mentioned above, if you bring your truck in for regular maintenance this recall will be performed.
