Thread: Camper Manufacturers

    Re: Camper Manufacturers

I am personally a big fan of the Grand Design.

I believe it is owned by Winnebago now but still seems to be a great 5th, they are all relatively light for what they are.

Cant really go wrong with Keystone tho!

Me and my wife are full time campers for the past 2 years do to my work so we have been in alot of them.

I like KZ but they do run a bit heavy IMO.

    Good luck w the hunt!

Can you guys also give me info on pin weights?

Some campers have a sticker on the door which I assume is with options as it has always been heavier than what the manufacturer states online for hitch weight.

Some list the weight as dry hitch weight while others just say hitch weight. Im lost and want to make sure we are staying safe and legal.

When we were shopping for our full-time rig, I always looked at the GVWR, the most the rig could safely weigh loaded for travel. So you can figure that, on a fifth wheel, your pin weight will be between 20-25% of the GVWR.

    Happy shopping!

Beware those naughty RV salesmen will sell you anything - even a RV that is way over your weight limit!

They very seldom care 3 hoots about your families safety - let alone others on the road as well.

The Sell is all they think about.

I've already just had to drive away from 1 in OKC within the last month.

I have a Prime Time Crusader 320RLT. Dry weight is supposed to be 10,100# with a 1,700# pin weight. With all our gear, full propane and 1/3 tank water it weighs in right at the max gvwr of 12,200 with a 2400# pin weight (20%). That's right at the max rating for my 2012 with 3.73 gears. It doesn't sag much and tows like a dream.

    Re: Camper Manufacturers

    I second the Keystone.

We had a 2005 Forest River 28' travel trailer we bought new and it seemed to be on the cheaper side but it lasted many years and I even lived in it for a year.

Was in great shape when we sold it.

We found a good deal last year on a used 2014 Keystone Cougar 27' 5th wheel and this is much better built than the Forest River and its technically half-ton towable so you would think some things were done for weight but so far its a well built trailer.

No funny squeaks or squeals, nothing that would tell me its of poor quality.

It's just the Wife and Myself with the Granddaughter occasionally so we don't need anything bigger and my 18 Ram 3500 barely knows its there.

Whomever owned it before us took very good care of it.

The woodwork isn't scratched and the outside isn't faded, probably garaged.

They also replaced the tires with 10-ply trailer tires so we really got lucky finding it.

This is the type of information - I like to see!
Kinda gives me an idea of what type of weights to begin looking for...

My 2500 has a horrible weak payload rating of 2006.09lbs & a max tow rate of 17306.09...

    Same boat!

And like I said the sales people are no help in regards to hitch weights.

I am planning to call the manufacturers directly with the vin to see what they say.

I'm betting I'll get the same clouded answer hahaha.

We are currently looking at a 2020 Forest River Salem Hemisphere Elite 36FL or the 34RL. I also have a 2500 and they are good and hitch weight. The RL has and East/West facing bed which we prefer and the FL has another .5 bath which is awesome.

Now we just need to find one that’s been used for about a year!

    Those look awesome!

I'm trying my best to stay under 35ft overall length and that's hard.

Seems like the longer models are balanced better for the 2500 with the lighter hitch weight.

To be honest I am focusing more on my rear axle capacity more than payload, still going to do my best to stay under if possible nut the axle capacity as well as tire and wheel ratings matter more in my opinion.

The 2k payload is to keep us at or under 10k GVW 3/4 ton rating, but look at your door sticker.

Mine states 6k front and 6.5k rear for ratings on my 17 2500.

Somebody correct me if I am wrong please!

Maybe there is more to payload than I am thinking, maybe not?
