    P0542

OBD II fault code P0542 is defined as “Intake Air Heater "A" Circuit High”.

About a week ago I cleaned battery terminals, it threw code P0542 tried clearing it, it says permanent.

I’ve check all connections at battery and going to relay for heater.

Can’t get it to go away and it’s driving me insane!!

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Check and wiggle the grid heater connection on the intake plenum.

It's where the heavy gauge wire goes.

If it's a loose, park the truck, because the grid heater will have to be replaced.

If it's not, the bolt can fall into the intake and cause catastrophic engine damage.

I have a PDF document from Mopar Tech Authority on troubleshooting P0542.

However as a basic member you will not be able to download it.

Perhaps you can PM me with your email address and I could send it to you that way.

Finding the specific explanation of what they mean by "high" is near impossible on-line, but as a non-mechanic I will throw my 2 cents in...

I would guess that the actual grid itself and the high current wire leading to it are fine.
The problem is on the control side of the circuit. One of the two light gauge wires that go between the PCM and the grid heater relay (solenoid) are faulted, or perhaps the front (coil portion) of the grid heater relay itself is bad.
Could simply be the connections at the relay and not harness damage.

The pdf that @AK Bob posted for you is perfect!
I can feed you more info, pictures, info, etc... if you require but again... I'm no mechanic.

    Keep us posted!
    Thanks,
    -Jake-

Let me see what I can post for right now...
Soon as this holiday weekend is over I can get to my truck and make a video of where everything is that you need to test.

    1.) Do you have a basic multi-meter?
    2.) Is your truck deleted?

    Thanks,
    -Jake-

    Re: P0542

Shown below is a grid heater relay.

The two arrows I inserted are pointing to the two smaller electrical terminals that indicate what I believe is the "problem side" of the issue.

That relay is located under the hood, on the passenger side, halfway down the fender well.

I can post a video after the weekend.

Also note that @AK Bob knows a lot about this issue and how to troubleshoot professionally.

When you get time to post let me know if you are you a mechanic or a tech by chance?

I understand its a busy week so no problem with a late reply to my questions.

    Thanks,
