Planning to buy a Cummins this week, help!

Hello! After looking at all the Ram forums, this is by far the best! I'm doing as much research as I can before buying a truck, hopefully this week. I'm looking at around 2015 Ram 2500 or 3500 under 100K miles. I'll be pulling our 25' travel trailer for now, and possible a 32' later this year. I don't think we'll move to a 5th wheel, but you never know.

Soooo, thoughts on a 2500 vs the 3500? Is the cost of maintenance much different between the two? Is the delete process basically the same? I have a hard time buying one and not doing the delete, it just seems like you're doing the truck a disservice otherwise.

    Thanks in advance,

    Joe and the Family

Welcome to the forum! Maintaining/modding the two will cost the same unless you get a dually(2 more tires obviously).

As for a travel trailer, how often do you tow it and how far do you tow it in a year?

We will be towing full time starting in May. Probably about 9K fully loaded now, and up to 12K next year. Planning to see as much of North America as we can for a year.

The biggest difference between a Gen4 2500 and 3500 is the payload capacity and rear leaf on the 3500 vs coil on the 2500.

The 2500 will have a much better ride going down the highway but you will lose payload.

If you plan on tossing a motorcycle, quad etc in the back and pack alot of stuff for kids and such you will benefit from the 3500.

If its mostly towing in the 12k range and not alot of stuff in the truck itself a 2500 will do fine.

The 3500 will also give you the High Output engine option if it has the Aisin transmission which is not an option on the 2500.

Depending on where you are from another thing to consider is registration costs and insurance.

Unless its like Oregon where registration is a flat fee per vehicle it might be worth considering.

    Joe,

Go with the 3500 hands down. The 2500 has rear coil springs and it limits your payload terribly. I know this, just bought a slide in truck camper, could not get the one I really wanted due to payload issues. Now I am upgrading the hell out of my suspension to make due.

    The delete is the same.

    Welcome Joe and the family!!!
3500 hands down for any heavy towing. You will have better stability with a dually compared to a single wheel...
