My Personal Opinion as well - Bud!
I have No Plans on buying a new Ram again - I'm paying this one off & driving it way into retirement...
I don't know enough about ZFs reputation or past reliability to comment on it - nor have I researched for any HD diesel applications already in use.
My first Gut instinct would be go with a company with a Well Proven Track Record of success with the HD Diesel application. (Maybe a NEW upgraded Aisin)?

Hopefully its stouter than the GM version.
I'd rather see ZF come than Allison. If Ram does like GM did they'll take a 68RFE and put an Allison case on it.

I know alot of DMax guys who went that route because of the Allison trans so I don't doubt it will help sell a few more Rams provided its done right. As for me I am quite satisfied with my Ram Aisin and honestly for what I do its overkill many times over.
I worked for a large waste collection service for many years and watched 8 and 10 liter Cummins eat the older 4 and 5 speed industrial Allison automatics much faster than their Cat and Detroit counterparts in those old garbage trucks. It will take Allison more than a few years to win me over.

The 8sp (8HP70) I had in my 2014 Ram was really impressive!
I just literally hated the so called - filled for life ATF idea & a huge pain in the A$$ to service this thing!
At least Allison makes the service of their transmission a snap.
It will be interesting if they (ZF) can step up and create a Big Boy Transmission that will handle the 6.7L.
Hey! - its made in Germany! - So create this Transmission with a friggen Dipstick & Drain Plug and for goodness sakes a external Spin on (Synthetic media) filter (For Easy replacement) - I'm older and a Stickler for easy/smart maintenance...
I actually will not have a single dog in this fight - due to I will never own one.
Once my warranty is up my 68RFE will get a upgraded valve body and lord knows what else - depends on $$$ flowing in at that time.
Whomever gets the Contract - I only hope they are COMPETENT enough to get it right the first time!

Yes, I had aisin and ZF crossed up, Toyota owns part of Aisin.
