Thread: Exhaust Brake Warm Up Issue

Re: Exhaust Brake Warm Up Issue

Could be the symptoms of a worn VGT actuator.

Could be the exhaust back pressure sensor feedback...meaning the tube feeding exhaust pressure sensor needs cleaning or the sensor itself replacing.

No need to worry much provided the turbo spools correctly and the brake function works.

Cleaning the exhaust back pressure sensor and sensor itself is going to be my next go to before anything else.

That would be awesome if that solved it.

I don’t think the actuator is weak being that it functions flawlessly while driving with no hesitation or sticking.

Hopefully picking away at things one by one will eventually narrow it down and solve the issue.

I’ll definitely spread the word if and when I find the key factor.

The actuator may be sticking but you just don't see it. They can stick in very specific points of the motion. Mine is at 10% right now. You need to data log or graph the actual VS the demanded for the vanes and see if they both track the same. I bet there is some difference.
Also, graph the data for just driving around. You may find that the values lag each other at times and you just never noticed it before.
    Don't ask how I know.

I have the same thing happen when the truck is cold and it starts to close the vanes it will fluctuate a little and make the truck shake and you can here tone change it only lasts about 6 seconds and then it smooths out.

I just cleaned my exhaust back pressure sensor and it had some soot in it and some condition.

I cleaned the tube and the sensor and made shore the hole was clear in the manifold, put back together and I started it and the truck started smooth and was 100 percent better.

I have a PPEI tune currently and I disconnected the exhaust pressure sensor long ago.

I haven't seen any ill effects.

My truck has been making this noise for over 20k miles now.

Still not sure what is going on.

I just avoid it by not having the exhaust brake on when its cold enough out for the engine to go into high idle.

Not sure if letting it run like this could damage anything or not.

Man that does sound weird? Almost sounds like a “half a 12v tune with surging”. Does it only do it on high idle with the exhaust brake on? Is the truck “disinfected “ and tuned? Or stock?

    Shoot us an email info@doublerdiesel.com

Sounds like the truck is loosing the pilot injection during negative load situation when the turbo is warmup mode.

No harm it but I think we can make it stop that.

Re: Exhaust Brake Warm Up Issue

Thanks Ray, good to know it wont hurt anything and that it can be fixed with tuning.

My truck already had DRD tuning when I purchased it so I'm not illegible for tune updates since I did not originally purchase the tunes.

Cannot afford to pay for new tunes just to fix this.

Maybe when I modify my valve body Ill get new tunes to get this fixed and increase line pressure at the same time eventually.

    Thanks again.

Is this what your truck is doing?

I can’t figure out what mine is doing either.
