    Loping/Surging At Low RPM/Acceleration

    Hey all,

My truck, 2014 3500 with straight pipe, DEF/EGR delete & MM3 tuner, recently started to surge or lope but only when I'm usually accelerating or barely feathering the throttle.

If I jump on it, she runs fine.

The delete was done almost two years ago, which makes me wonder why it hasn't done this until now if it has to do with the delete.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

With your MM3, go to the menu and select change PID; the percentage menu has the rail pressure items you’ll need.

Select the rail pressure actual for one and the rail pressure desired for another.

Side by side is easier to monitor both- ideally, they would match 100% - some variance is average, but there is a fine line between okay and too much.

Usually, about 1000psi difference or more, I think there is an issue/opportunity for improvement.

Take a drive and look at values when symptoms occur and report back!

Also, do the same comparison of the turbo actuator.

That can cause the same issues at low power if it is sticking intermittently but not enough for a code.

I went in and looked for the rail pressure but couldn't find it in the PID menu.

Just going to ask some basic questions.

I don't know your background with a diesel or a Cummins but are you seeing any smoke out of the exhaust when this happens?

How long has it been since you changed your fuel filter?

Do you buy your fuel from the same place or a place that does high fuel turnover? In your area are you using winter blend fuel?

The other thing is I don't know if you are from Michigan or this may be your first year in cold weather with a diesel.

I have seen diesel's have fueling issues in really cold weather.

I have a similar issue with my 2016 2500; just a few weeks ago, I was having the same symptoms of the lope/surge.

    I'm running a 2nd Gen swap, though, with a Borg 467.7 turbo.

Were you ever able to figure this out?

I also have a '16 with a swap doing similar but only now and then.

    I have a similar issue.

Once I get driving, it's okay, but oddly too, even after I've been going for quite a while, putting it in reverse causes the surging also.

I haven't figured out why yet.

I'm about to charge my fuel filters in the next few weeks; see if that improves anything.
