    Block Heater Question

My 2015 3500 came with the block heater installed.

I went to plug it in before a blizzard a few weeks ago and got the wonderful tingle of 110 when touching the chrome bumper.

The heater still works but what are suggestions?

I ohmed from each pin to the bumper but didn’t see anything.

Do the elements go bad and short out?

I’m no electrician but sounds like a ground problem somewhere.

You may want to follow the cord back from the plug to the heater and check for any damage.

If I remember correctly the cord plugs into the heater.

You could take it out completely and do an inspection.

    Re: Block Heater Question

I had some sparks flying off mine last winter and it stopped working all together.

I've found it next to impossible to keep the end dry with the factory cord and cap.

Ended up having to replace the 3 prong end.

Debating putting a more waterproof plug in the bottom plastic portion of the bumper.

I haven’t followed all the way back yet since I’ve decided it was to cold to lay on the ground LOL.

If I’m not mistaken these are nothing more than a sealed coil resistor to dissipate voltage causing heat.

Before digging in I was trying to see if there was a common issue with elements failing.

I'd pull the cord off the truck and thoroughly inspect it - visually, and with a multi-meter. Immersion heaters like that fail open more often than short.... and they are pretty rugged units. The cord would be my first suspect.

It's always a good idea to plug your truck into a GFCI outlet only. Just putting that out there for anyone who may need to hear that.

Some love it and some don't, but I installed this several years ago and haven't had any problems with it.

I even cut a small hole in the winter grill cover to accommodate it.

It came with a new cord.

Have you inspected your power source?

There is no power to the Block heater until you plug it in.

Make sure you are using the right size power (extension cord).

I use a Rigid cord that lights up on the end, works great and if the end burns up Rigid will replace it.

If the cord isn't chafed, my bet is the heater element is leaking.

In that scenario, you may not get a ohm readout.

    Voltage is too low.
