Engine Idle up by itself from VGT

Just curious as dumb as this may sound I am very over protective over my Diesel’s LOL.

I live in Michigan where it is cold outside so I ALWAYS let my truck warm up to 110 ECT before driving.

I usually walk away and back into house and my damn truck idles up more on its own my guess because the VGT turbo which I’m gonna change but I use to have a 6.0 power stroke and it did this.

My question does the idling up on its own while the engine cold and being warmed up hurt the engine?

I keep walking out to hit the brake so it goes back to normal idle because in my mind I would imagine less work on the engine while cold is better?

Are you talking about the exhaust brake coming on when cold?

It's not due to the VGT.

The ECU is programmed to kick on high idle when it's below a certain temp.

Not going to hurt it one bit and it will warm up quicker. High idle is only 1,000 rpm I believe.

It might be but I don’t even think my exhaust brake is on I thought it was the turbo but it idles up every time on its own in the morning

Should I always keep exhaust brake on?

    Short answer, yes.

Most folks here run the exhaust brake all the time.

The VGT restricting the exhaust during warm up puts a slight load on the engine and builds heat quicker.

The automatic idle up feature also warms up the coolant quicker.

Assuming you have your block heater plugged in too?
