I'd stick with 5w-40 all year.

also not knowing what truck you have ((EDIT) saw the mileage in original post you can ignore the "older trucks" part, but others may find it relevant) I will also say this. anything with an EGR and DPF run 5-40 always. The older trucks 12V VP44 and the 03-07 with the CP3 I ran 15-40 year around and used the block heater (the book says you can run a lighter oil, I never was a fan of that), never had an issue (one truck I maintained/drove over a million miles) NWNJ and I see similar temperatures to you as I travel the NE US a good bit.

I run 15w-40, but single digits temps round these parts is rare.

I use Shell T6 5w-40 for several reasons.....

    1 - Quality product
    2 - Widely available
    3 - Cheap ($55 for 12 quarts)
4 - I have talked to former Shell engineers in multiple conversations and am satisfied with my findings
5 - In Wyoming it varies widely during the winter, one day is -25F the next is 40F above
