    5w40 vs 15w40

    So my truck has 490 miles on it .

    Winter is coming and in NWPA we can have lows as much as -20 do I need to switch to the lighter grade?

    That cold I would probably switch to a lighter grade.
    I run Royal Purple 15w40 year round and never had any issues.

    I run 5w40 T6 Synthetic oil year round in Alaska. Temperatures can vary from -30 F to +80 F

    5w-40 T6 is what manual calls for.

    From what I've been told, 15w-40 is good down to about 0F. Anything below that you should probably have the lighter weight.

    What weight oil is in the truck right now? They come with 5w40 from the factory.

    For that cold of climate - I agree with the posted above!
    5W-40 would be a wise choice for year round use.
    Some 5W-40 oils these days are widely available.

    Another option is to run a True 100% Synthetic PAO 15W-40 year round- which ALL have a amazing (cold weather) low pour point as well as extremely good cold (pump ability) properties. Though these oils are more expensive & harder to find on the normal shelf.
    None of this will concern-your normal owner!
    (I consider myself FAR from Normal)

    I make a simple habit of keeping a extra gallon in the garage cabinet @ all times / also have this same gallon with me in the tote when we travel.

    Once again: This is only my thoughts @ simple opinion.
