    What’s your best tow tune?

Looking at DRD for my spark plug upgrade kit. I will be pulling a toy hauler from time to time. 5th wheel. Dry weight is around 12,000. Loaded is 16,000. My truck is a 15 2500 Megacab 4x4 with 3.42 rear end and a 68RFE. The only thing done will be the spark plug upgrade and a RevMax valve body. The valve body is the HD/towing one.

What are you pulling and what tune are you choosing to pull in?

I have the Revmax valve body and billet converter in my 13 with 3.42 gears and 35's so pretty similar to yours.

When I tow my 40' RV, (weighs about 9K) I set it to 30HP.

Most here would probably offer the same advice as would Ray.

@Noneck, is the 30HP tune pretty much designed just for towing?

I would think a 60HP or even a 90HP tune with a responsible driver would yield better fuel mileage while towing.

To my knowledge it's not specifically for towing, but with the trans and gearing it's probably best not to push these things too much with a big load.

Ray recommended the 30HP tune when I asked him about towing so that's what I use.

I've only towed the RV and handful of times it I've never felt the need for anything more when pulling it with the 30HP tune.

    I run 120HP otherwise.

With the 30HP tune is it necessary to run an get probe while towing?

    That I'm not sure of.

I do have one installed in the EGR blockoff which I believe they say shows a cooler temp than it really is?

I never got any alarms when towing but admittedly I'm not sure if it's accurate or how hot is too hot so hopefully someone else will chime in.

I tow in the same weight range as you. I always tow with the recommended 30HP tune. If you attempt to tow with a higher HP setting your EGT will exceed safe levels. I monitor mine and have the high limit alarm programmed for 1250F.

When towing in the 30HP tune have you ever had your EGT temps get to high?

I’m debating on if I really need the probe or not. If the 30HP is a safe bet and all your numbers stay good then I may just skip it.

It really depends on the terrain and how aggressively you drive.

I have set off my alarm while towing with 30HP tune. So I know when to back off.

I have also set off the alarm when empty running the 90HP tune.

I would recommend the EGT probe anyway.

The main reason I tuned was for reliability and longevity.

The ability to monitor EGT’s is a great tool that can help prevent serious engine damage.
