    Road Trip/Vacation!!!!

So in a couple months my family(wife, kiddo, and myself)are taking my 2019 3500 dually on a road trip. Going from Pennsylvania to Wyoming to Colorado to Oklahoma back to Pennsylvania. Roughly 5000 miles. Leaving right before Christmas. Roughly 3 weeks.

Truck will have roughly 11k miles on it when I leave. Now I already changed the oil at 3k(rotella T6 15w 40). Thinking of changing oil again before I go but switching to T6 5w 40. Also thought about changing the fuel filters before the trip. However, thinking maybe I should just take the fuel filters along just in case they get clogged and really need changed.

Any one want to add their two cents on what they would do???

Also wondering what extra supplies would you take???

    2021 2500 68RFE..... I'll just keep the goodies a secret!!!

Man that sounds like an awesome trip you have planned out! I carry extra fuel filters, a spare serpentine belt, an old (but still good) water pump and a generic hand tool kit. I’ve also got ramps for changing tandem trailer tires, tire plugs, and an on board air compressor that can juice tires to 80PSI. If you bring all this stuff you surely won’t need any of it.

Sounds like a fun trip, you didn’t mention if you were going to pull a fifth wheel or camper. I can tell you if you are going to haul a heavy load you will run through 2 1/2 gallons of DEF every 500 miles. Depending on the price and availability of DEF I would recommend stopping by Costco and hauling it with you. Prior to tuning my truck I would haul six 2 1/2 gallon boxes when driving the 3,000 miles between Alaska and Minnesota.

I'm leaving the horse trailer home for this trip. Empty I go thru about 2 1/2 gal of def every 1500. I do plan on taking a few extra jugs. Do you run 5w or 15w?

Yes, it makes a big difference with DEF usage when you haul a load. As for oil I run T6 5W-40 year round.

Somewhere on here there's a thread for stocking up a 'boonie box'... most of which you shouldn't need with a new truck. I would think.

I normally do a yearly run to see the kids and grandkids from TN to NV to CA and after a bit of wandering, then we go home. One thing many forget is a spare air cleaner. There are many places that plow when you least expect it. I had a time when the truck tried to suck in the filter to the turbo when it only has 1,000 miles on it. My present filter is a cotton dry filter that is reusable one so I can clean it out in the hotel room, let dry and run in the morning. Just a thought.

I was not able to find a filter when I needed it ...... but the store said said I could order one and wait a couple days to get it. Want to hunt and wait ?

I think I'm going to do that with the air filter and fuel filters.

I just got my order in from Geno's Garage : Air filter and both fuel filters.

Since I'll only be at 11k when I leave for the trip I think I'm just going to take them as spares.
