How hot is too hot regarding towing and EGTs.

Just wanting to get a pooling of knowledge and experience as to how hot of an EGT is too hot when towing? I'm running a deleted 2010 ram with 68RFE, DRD tuning, Switch 0 for towing. I've heard that the 6.7 can take the heat... but exactly what does that mean? Chime in boys and girls and let me know what you know or think about this.

I heard somewhere that Cummins tests for 1200* for 20 min... I have no idea if it's factual

My 3500 DRW is a 2010. Run a RaceMe with the box tunes. Recently started towing with the +30 hp tune. I rarely see EGT’s above 1200. If it creeps up I just back off and downshift. My understanding is you’re OK at 1300 or so for a brief period. 68RFE rarely goes above 160 unless towing through a town in stop and go traffic, when it’ll go to 170-190 or so.

I echo everything @Bobtipton said regarding egt temps. I have even trans temp hit 200* a couple times pulling the camper through summer beach traffic.

I personally have seen 1500 towing for a brief period, then back down to 1100 my aurora 5k sucks for towing .

    I've also seen trans temp at 215 on my 68RFE. (09 2500).

Keep in mind brief periods of heat won't hurt anything, the bottom of the Piston is being oil cooled. Just don't try to pull a grade at 1300+

My understanding is the 6.7 can take heat much better than 5.9 due to the alloy used. I think a Regen (from the factory) will run the egts up in the 1350 +range. I wouldn’t be afraid to take it that hot for a short period of time but I would say 1200 and under is where you want to be. Just for peace of mind if you tow a lot then strive for a setup that will keep you around 1k* or under on regular towing conditions

as a side note cylinders 5&6 will run up to 200* f +\- with stock manifold

It might be good for me to put the pyro where the EGR cooler block off is. Right now, I have it mounted in the collector pre-turbo.

That’s where my pyro is mounted - rear cooler block off plate.
