rhino lining ranch hand grill guard

Question for you guys, I REALLY need to redo my Ranch Hand Guard (its a Full guard with the front receiver type) its rusting/peeling bad. I plan on using a Cherry Picker to hold it while redoing it. Here is my question. I plan on sand blasting it all down to the metal, what is the best and cheapest rhino liner type spray on to use and how much do I need? I have a
gravity fed spray gun. and do I need to primer/etch it even though its down to bare metal if using a rhino lining....I'm thinking Herculiner.. Thoughts

    Stat.

I guess I wasn't too clear on my question, now that I re read it.

Do I need to use and etching/primer coat before applying Rhino liner/Herculiner on sandblasted metal?

Or is the liner gonna fall/flake off right away?

In my opinion don't use herculiner. I have used that in the past and it didn't hold up well at all even just to the sun! I have had good results with raptor liner but if you want to keep it somewhat glossy you have to use the UV stabilizer stuff they have. I need to re coat my Ranch Hand as well but I think I am just going to get it powder coated. Seems like whatever they use when they make them doesn't bond too well.

I know you have to scuff up the surface really well to get any kind of liner to adhere to it. I had my side steps sprayed with Line-X and never had an issue with them.

All the shops around here want big money to powder coat. Where I could line it for probably a 1/3 of the cost.

I get that. But would sand blasting scuff it up enough?

To be honest I’m not sure? Seems to me sandblasting will still leave sort of a smooth finish on it. I would use a wire wheel on a drill to really scuff it up good and then apply whatever lining you choose.

Sandblasting should be plenty to scuff it up. If you do go with the DIY bed liner any two part kit will work well and be far superior to herculiner. I know powder coating is expensive but it has also come a long way in durability.
