    Manual vs. Auto

I know there’s a whole debate on this, but mines a little more specific to my needs and wants. I have a 2004.5 5.9 with the 48 and am looking to achieve 700+hp down the road so I’m starting to address the things I need before adding bigger turbos or heavy tunes. In all reality, is it more cost effective and more effective in general to go with let’s say a stage 1 competition 48re from Firepunk or to swap the auto for a manual with a southbend? Which is the cheaper option? And which will hold up better? Also if you say manual, which one? NV5600 or G56? Thanks!

They are very popular and can hold a lot of power! I’m not a transmission guru but that what I have been told from a lot of people that do know. Firepunk builds a very good transmission. You could also do a manual valve body on a 48. What are you going to be doing with it? Drag truck, pulling etc.??

I’m not trying to turn it into a full time race truck but it’d be nice to take it to the strip every now and then and smoke the occasional import on the street

Then a good built 48 will be just fine. Tow what you want and smoke that import!! LOL. Manuals are just not as popular anymore. Yes people still run them with some power but your way more efficient with an automatic.

But of course don’t take my word for it. Do some research on YouTube and some other forum. You will find the same answers

Now should I do a full swap or build up my current 48?

If you can have it at a shop that is good then have them build it. Find out what Internals they use. Sometimes it’s better just to swap and get the warranty. Up to you on what your budget is. You can easily spend $9000 on a built transmission very quick.

I’ve definitely discovered that with looking at a stage 1 Firepunk for $6200. The warranty makes sense though. I’d rather pay an extra grand or two for the warranty on a brand new transmission than have my built original go out and ending up spending even more. Thanks!
